Lewis Hamilton was overcome with emotion after securing a long-awaited victory at the British Grand Prix. The F1 legend had not won a race for over two-and-a-half years before the weekend.

The seven-time world champion's previous win came at the 2021 Saudi Grand Prix during his intense title fight with Max Verstappen. Hamilton's triumph at Silverstone marked his first time on top of the podium in 31 months and a record ninth victory at the heart of British racing.

The timing couldn't have been better for the 39-year-old, who is set to depart Mercedes at the end of the season, as he got to share the joyous moment with his loved ones. The magnitude of the occasion saw the typically stoic Hamilton break down in tears as he celebrated conquering his almost three-year challenge.

Post-race, Hamilton shared his feelings: "I don't think I ever have [cried after a race]. I often think about the weight of a tear and what it carries."

"With 2021 and the past few years, how challenging it's been, I think there's happiness and there's sorrow within those tears. Ultimately, just gratitude. I'm really, really, really grateful and also proud of myself and proud of the team.

"I think there have been so many moments where I didn't think that I was good enough or I was able to do what I did today ever again. That's a really, really tough thing to accept. Today's shown that I don't need to accept that."

Hamilton smashed records at Silverstone, clinching the title for the most wins at a single track and becoming the oldest F1 driver to win a race in the 21st century. Additionally, he's now the first racer to triumph following his 300th career start, with this British Grand Prix marking his 344th.

Despite a glorious career dotted with accolades, Hamilton continues to break records and face new obstacles. He conceded that his stint without a win had taken a toll on his mental well-being and wasn't a simple issue to resolve.

"Honestly, when I came back in 2022, I thought that I was over it," confessed Hamilton. "And I know I wasn't, and it's taken a long time to heal that kind of feeling. That's only natural for anyone that has that experience. I've just been continuing to try and work on myself and find that inner peace day by day."
