House of the Dragon Season 2 official trailer

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from the House Of The Dragon books.

House Of The Dragon wouldn’t be half as destructive without its almighty beasts with Vhagar the most frightening of them all.

Balerion was the only remaining original dragon of the Targaryen brood who died of old age, leaving Vhagar as the largest in Westeros.

The Sky and HBO prequel hasn’t been afraid to showcase just how big she is with frequent scenes of her dominating the skies, bringing fear to those below her.

So naturally, fans of the TV adaptation who haven’t read George RR Martin’s book series, are curious to know how the fearsome dragon meets her end.

How does Vhagar die in the House Of The Dragon books?

Vhagar was previously ridden by Visenya Targaryen before her death but when Aemond Targaryen was a young boy, he was able to take control of the beast himself.

Fast forward to the Dance Of The Dragons in the books, there is an unforgettable battle above the God’s Eye lake near Harrenhal between Vhagar and her rider Aemond and the dragon Caraxes and Daemon Targaryen.

Following many conflicts in the war, Caraxes was considered as one of the fiercest dragons and it was during the Dance that Daemon decided to challenge his nephew to a one-on-one fight with their beasts.

Aemond accepted and this resulted in a brutal battle which saw Vhagar and Caraxes grapple in the skies.

Daemon then leapt from his dragon onto Vhagar and stabbed his nephew in his good eye with the Dark Sister sword, killing him instantly.

This, in turn, led to both of the dragons falling into the lake below, killing Vhagar and Daemon.

Caraxes was the only one to survive the ordeal, with the dragon crawling to shore in the books.

But Caraxes dies soon after, having succumbed to its injuries sustained during the fight.

So only time will tell if the TV drama is going to follow the books’ plots to the letter or alter the story in any way.

House Of The Dragon is available to watch on Sky and NOW in the UK and HBO and Max in the US.
