Michael Mosley: TV doctor's final steps on Greek island retraced

BBC Radio 4 listeners were moved to tears on Friday as Michael Mosley's final interview aired on the broadcaster. Last Sunday, the TV doctor's body was discovered in Greece after a four-day search took place.

In his final interview, How to Live a Good Life with Professor Paul Bloom, the 67-year-old was heard speaking at the Hay Festival, two weeks before his death.

It wasn't long before people commented on the emotional chat as many were moved to tears. @indevine commented: "@BBCRadio4. What an exit. Sad listen to Just One Thing, but a perfect example of Michael Mosley’s ability to make sense of difficult concepts and do it with wit and integrity. The world has lost a fantastic interviewer."

@emmareedwrites added: "Not only is this fantastic in content on how to live a good life (should be on prescription), it’s an extremely emotional listen in light of what has happened. ⁦Such a poignant reminder of what we will miss. @BBCRadio4 ⁩ #michaelmosley."

@stellaparkes tweeted: "Just listened to this. So sad to think Michael Mosley is no longer with us but he left a wealth of recordings and advice." @BrimbleGaynor said: " Listening now. Deeply moving knowing he’s not here any longer."

@cummingsradio wrote: “This lovely man always had time for BBC Local Radio. He didn’t just appear on all the huge national TV and radio, he gladly joined us whenever we asked him to appear…without fail. Still can’t believe he’s gone.”

With @juliahobsbawm commenting: “Very poignant hearing Michael Mosley on @BBCRadio4 - what a loss.”

The interview was featured as part of one of the BBC’s special tributes to the late doctor, with a broadcast called Michael Mosley: The Doctor Who Changed Britain airing on BBC One at 8pm on Friday evening.

However, in the afternoon, Radio 4 listeners got to listen to There’s Only One Michael Mosley with presenter Chris Van Tulleken introducing the show.

Before playing the interview, Chris admitted he didn't know it would be the last time he ever saw Michael.

Chris paid tribute to the 67-year-old, both for his working career and personality off-camera.

He added: "Michael's death has moved so many of us, so really I'm speaking for lots of television and audio presenters and producers.

"His legacy is going to live on in our memories - everytime we brush our teeth standing on one leg or fast a little longer in between meals, we build up our strength doing squats or do any one of the hundreds of tricks that he taught us.

"I'll miss him as a friend and as a mentor - but perhaps most of all, I'll miss him as a broadcaster. So I hope you enjoy this - his final interview."

During Michael's final interview with Professor Bloom, listeners got to hear him reflect on his life, career and the importance of family.

In part of their chat, Michael said: "I've been obsessed with the question on how to live a good life for a long time.

"I come from a long line of missionaries on my mother's side and a long line of bankers on my father's side, so I'm torn in two different directions and in some way that has dictated the course of my life."

There's Only One Michael Mosley is available to listen to on BBC Sounds.
