'Like going back in time!' UK town 'cut off' from rest of the country twice a day

When asked to think of the UK's most isolated and peaceful places, most people would point to the Scottish Islands or the most remote parts of Cornwall.

Essex, with its urban centres and proximity to London, would be less likely to come to people's minds.

However, located to the south of Colchester, Mersea Island is hailed as one of the UK's most serene locations where locals are proud of their tight-knit community.

Mersea sits close to sea level at high tide, meaning it is vulnerable to flooding which "cuts off" the island from the rest of the country for a couple of hours daily.

But locals are still happy there. Speaking to EssexLive, resident Debbie Moore, 61, said: "It's like going back in time to how the world was 40 years ago when everybody knew their neighbours and people would say good morning, good evening in the street.

"It takes me back to the days when everyone had time for each other."

Linda Sterry, 75, has lived on Mersea for 25 years. She says the island looks the same as it did when she first arrived.

Debbie added: "It's a real community. Everyone looks out for one another. No one needs to be on their own."

Those who visit Mersea can head to the west of the island to enjoy the quiet high streets and small cafes.

Getting to the island isn't too difficult either. You can get the train to Colchester, which is less than an hour's ride from London.

In Colchester, you can then catch a bus to West Mersea. Get off at the 'Blue Row' stop, and after a brief ten-minute walk, you will have arrived.

A drive from Central London would take you to Mersea in around an hour and 40 minutes.
