Reason why Zara Tindall doesn't have a royal title - and if she will she ever get one

The reason why Zara Tindall and her brother, Peter Phillips, have no titles is simple and one she feels "lucky" for.

Zara Tindall is a beloved member of the Royal Family, however, she does not bear a royal title and the reason behind it is quite simple - it's all down to tradition.

Princess Anne's daughter, as well as her brother, Peter Phillips, are both grandchildren of the late Queen Elizabeth, just like their cousins, Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

Unlike them, Zara and Peter were not automatically given HRH titles upon their birth because their father, Captain Mark Phillips, was not a prince.

According to the rules, only the children and grandchildren of the monarch's sons and the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales can automatically inherit HRH titles.

The late Queen did offer courtesy titles to both Zara and Peter. However, their parents rejected them.

Anne reflected on her decision back in 2020 while speaking to Vanity Fair and said: "I think most people would argue that there are downsides to having titles… So I think that was probably the right thing to do."

Therefore, the two siblings still remain in the line of succession, with Peter being 18th at the time of writing and Zara being 21st, however, they have no royal obligations.

In 2015, Zara told The Times of her parents' decision: "I’m very lucky that both my parents decided not to use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do."

And in 2023 she appeared on the Seven: Rob Burrow podcast with husband Mike Tindall and added: "From my point of view, I was obviously very lucky that my mother didn't give us any titles so I really commend her on that.

"We were very lucky that we got to do it a bit our own way,” she continued, referring to her upbringing with elder brother Peter Phillips. "

Former Buckingham Palace spokesman Dicki Arbiter previously said that "it was a masterstroke of the Princess Royal when she decided not to give her children titles".
