The contest to decide who should be the next leader of the Conservative party has begun, although the race has not got off to a quick start.

Rishi Sunak has agreed to stay in his position as interim leader of the party until a new successor has been chosen, but quite who that will be remains unclear.

It is understood that Priti Patel will put her hat in the ring, according to The Telegraph, however she has yet to offiically announce her candidancy.

A number of other candidates are expected to put themselves forward, including former Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

Other popular MPs within the party who are widely anticipated to run include Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick and Tom Tugendhat, however none have yet to officially announce their candidacy.

The Conservative party is embroiled in a party dispute on how to conduct the next leadership debate, and what the timeline should be.

There will be no further decision on the timetable for the leadership contest until at least next week, when the 1922 committee of backbench Tory MPs will meet again.

Some within the party would like the contest to be wrapped up in time for an announcement at party conference this September, while others are understood to want a longer timeframe.
