With hefty price tags, make sure the rug you get is going to be worth the money.

Rugs disproportionate to the size of the room will make the space feel disjointed, no matter how well you have stylised home decor.

Suzi Samaddar, room styling expert at Furn, recognised what a "wonderful" addition a rug can be.

"They can make a real statement all whilst bringing pattern, colour and warmth into a room," Suzi said to Express.co.uk.

"Rugs also have the practical elements of protecting your floor and providing a comforting texture underfoot."

While large rugs can bring about a cohesive look, too small of a rug can make the area look "cramped if they're placed in the wrong area".

But what size rug is the optimal size? "Usually, it’s recommended for a rug to cover 70 percent of your floor space," Suzi revealed.

"However, in smaller living rooms, it can often work better to have the rug under your coffee table and nothing else."

Suzi explained: "As coffee tables are often placed centrally in the room, adding the rug underneath will bring focus to this space."

As for the style and pattern of the rug, Suzi advised: "If you want to make a statement something like a paisley pattern works well.

"These are often complex and colourful, so keeping other accents in the room minimal so as not to make the room feel cluttered or detract from the rug is key.

"You can introduce a pop colour into any room with a patterned rug, whilst also creating depth and a focal point."

Fellow interiors expert Liv Conlon, CEO of ThePropertyStagers, pointed out that too many small rugs can do your place a disservice.

"An abundance of furniture and furnishings, such as small rugs, can make a room feel cramped and small," said Liv.

Therefore, when it comes to the size of the rug, you may need to go bigger than you originally thought.

In agreement is Kirsty Barton, based at Alternative Flooring, who said: "When considering size, generally go big.

"A rug that is too small for your space can easily be lost within the expanse of the room."

James Sheldon, furniture expert and manager at Online Sofa Shop, emphasised the need to "choose a rug that fits the space well" as it helps to ground the living area, for example.
