Peace lilies are popular amongst houseplant owners due to their lush green foliage, but it can be tricky to get them to grow their stunning white flowers

These beautiful plants are known for their long-lasting blooms that can last for months but will only flower if they are receiving the proper care.

Vladan Nikolic, a gardening expert also known as Mr Houseplant, said peace lilies are more likely to flower in the warmer months when they have more access to sunlight.

He said: “It is not unusual to see a peace lily not blooming, even when it is healthy and receiving good care. One of the most common reasons for peace lily plants not flowering is low light.

“If a peace lily doesn’t get enough light, it will not flower. This is easy to fix.”

How to get a peace lily to flower

In their native environment, peace lilies are known to grow on the floor of tropical rainforests and can survive without a lot of sunlight, but this does not mean they can go without.

Vladan said: “Peace Lilies can survive in incredibly low light levels (even as low as 100 lux (10-foot candles), but they will just be surviving, not thriving, their growth would be very slow, and they would definitely not be blooming.

“If you give your peace lilies light over 10,000 lux (1,000 foot candles), they should bloom after several months.

However, peace lilies cannot simply be placed next to a window as the harsh summer sun can scotch their leaves, which can cause burn marks on the leaves and cause the plant and to become stressed.

Instead, the best way to help peace lilies flower is to place them in indirect sunlight near a north or east-facing window in your home.

These windows typically receive more consistent but filtered light throughout the day, and the stable light helps the peace lily thrive without becoming scorched.

If a peace lily is still not flowering there may be an issue with its temperature or how frequently it is being watered which houseplant owners should regularly check to make sure the plant is healthy.

Vladan said: “Peace lilies need proper watering, a well-draining soil mix, balanced houseplant fertiliser, proper repotting, warmer temperatures, and humidity. All of these factors need to be good in order for peace lilies to bloom.

He added: “Once the potting soil is fully dry (use a chopstick to check it) and the plants become slightly droopy, they need water.

“Water the plants, count the days until the plants become droopy again, then water again. Next time water 24 hours before they get droopy.”

One way to help perk a peaceful lily up and help it flower is placing it near the window in a bathroom and kitchen, which are very steamy areas of the home which can help mist the plant and keep it at the right temperature.

However, if a peace lily is actively growing then consider giving it a fertiliser with a good N P K ratio or give it a supplement with kitchen scraps to make sure it is getting the nutrients it needs.

Vladan said: “If you get to know your peace lily plants really well and respond to their needs timely and properly, these tropical plants can bloom frequently just like mine.”
