Mushrooms are a versatile and delicious addition to any kitchen, but they can quickly become slimy and unappetising if not stored properly.

An expert has shared with Express.co.uk an easy storage method to keep your mushrooms fresh and flavourful for as long as possible, while avoiding fostering adverse conditions.

Vlatka lake, storage expert at Space Station, said: “Do not wash mushrooms before storing them. Washing adds moisture, which can lead to faster spoilage. Instead, clean them just before use.

“Unless you plan to use your mushrooms right away, avoid storing mushrooms in the container you bought them in and instead store them in a paper bag with the top folded over.

“The paper allows the mushrooms to breathe and prevents excess moisture from building up and minimise spoiling.”

The storage pro added: “If storing in the fridge, avoid the crisper drawer and instead store in the main part of the fridge so as much air as possible can circulate.”

The crisper drawer may seem like a good option, but it can be too humid for mushrooms.

Keeping them in the main fridge area ensures they stay cool and dry.

And it may seem counterintuitive not to wash them, especially if they have a layer of dirt still on them.

However, mushrooms absorb water like sponges, which can make them soggy. Instead of washing them before storing, clean them just before you start preparing your meal.

If they’re particularly dirty, gently wipe them with a damp paper towel or use a soft brush to remove any dirt.

In order to preserve all their flavour remember to keep your mushrooms away from other foods like onions, garlic, or cheeses in your fridge.

This is due to mushrooms being highly porous, meaning they can absorb strong smells in a short period of time.
