Supermarkets across the UK have been forced to recall thousands of popular lunch items such as sandwiches and wraps after concerns around E.Coli emerged

The Food Standard Agency issued an alert with dozens of products from Aldi, Asda, Boots and Sainsbury's affected. The recall involves products made by the Greencore Group, a leading manufacturer of convenience products in the UK, THIS! and Samworth Brothers Manton Wood sandwiches.

The move is down to the “possible presence” of Shiga toxin-producing E.Coli (STEC) in various items although E.Coli has not yet been detected in any of the products.

Sandwiches affected include favourites such as chicken salad wraps, BLTs and Ploughman’s sandwiches. The measure has been called as a “precautionary step” but customers have been urged to “not eat” items if any have been purchased.

One person has died in England due to E. coli, the UK Health Security Agency has reported. The recent E. coli outbreak in the UK is believed to be caused by some supermarket sandwiches containing salad leaves. So far, it has seen 275 confirmed cases across the country, new data shows.

What is the E.coli outbreak

More than 200 people have been infected across the UK since May 25, with at least 67 admitted to hospital.
The UK Health Security Agency said the outbreak included 147 cases in England, 27 in Wales, 35 in Scotland and two in Northern Ireland.
Around 1,500 cases of STEC are usually recorded in the UK each year.
E.coli, or Shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), is often transmitted through contaminated food or close contact with an infected person or animal.
Symptoms of infection include severe and sometimes bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever.

The FSA statement read: “Greencore Group is taking the precautionary step of recalling various sandwiches, wraps and salads because of possible contamination with E. coli.

“E.coli has not been detected in the products listed below but are being recalled as a precaution.”

The FSA warns that symptoms caused by STEC organisms include “severe diarrhoea (including bloody diarrhoea), abdominal pain, and sometimes haemolytic uremic syndrome, (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can be fatal.”

Point of sale notices will be displayed where the products were sold explaining to customers why the products are being recalled. Signs will also inform buyers what to do if they have already bought the products.

The FSA stressed that any items should be returned to the store where they were purchased where a full refund should be issued.
