Drivers are only just realising ‘life-changing’ button to cool ‘unbearably hot’ cars

Pressing a simple button located on the dashboard of almost any vehicle can dramatically cool cars over the summer.

Motorists have realised how a simple button found in almost all cars could help tackle the heat inside vehicles as temperatures rise this summer.

Road users feeling the heat are likely to turn on their petrol, diesel or electric vehicles air conditioning unit or open their windows.

The air conditioning may help but sometimes this may not be cool enough when temperatures are really high or vehicles have been sitting in direct sunlight.

However, turning on the air con and pressing the recirculation button located on the vehicle’s dashboard could change the picture.

One driver described the hack as a “life-changing” tip and was baffled they hadn’t known about it until recently.

TikTok channel @nicholassoos explained: “Alright guys. Let me change your life for the better, right now, today.

“So I've just learned something and I don't know how I've lived my entire life not knowing this simple fact and I’m here to teach you it.

“If you live somewhere where it's unbearably hot in the summer and your air conditioning in your car feels like it never gets cold enough in those mid-summer months, here’s a little trick.

“So we got our standard AC button, always on full blast in the middle of the summer and then there’s this button, this little guy, never use it, it's the recirculation button.

“What does having that button on do? Well, it recirculates the air. So think about it.

“It takes the cold air that’s already in the car, recirculates it through to cool it even more, spits it out at a cooler temp than it was and therefore making your car even colder in the summer.

“Like how am I just learning this now? Life hack. Use it. It’s summer. Have a cold car when you’re driving.”

The recirculation button usually displays a picture of a car with a squiggly arrow placed inside.

Experts at used car dealers Ken Brown Motors said motorists should be using the air recirculation button to ensure a vehicle gets “as cold as possible as quickly as possible”.

They commented: “It works by recirculating the cool air you get from your A/C when you first turn it on.

“The longer it’s on for, the cooler your vehicle will get! If you don’t use it, the car will use the air from the outside that is a lot warmer, and your A/C will work harder and continuously to cool the hot air.”

Experts at the RAC, the leading breakdown specialists and car insurance specialists, also highlighted the possible benefits of using the recirculation button.

They said: “Once the air conditioning is blowing cold, close all the windows and switch to (pre-cooled) recirculated air. You can now open the upper air vents and adjust the flow as required.”
