Motorists will be able to deactivate new Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) speed limiter tools set to be installed on new cars within weeks.
Experts have revealed the technology can be “temporarily overridden” but the system will still “reactivate” every time.
It means motorists will be unable to turn off the ISA tool completely but will have the power to change the settings ahead of every journey.
The revelation comes with new ISA speed limit rules set to be implemented in just over one week.
From July 7, 2024, all new cars sold in Europe must have the new ISA technology fitted due to new driving law changes.
Unregistered cars currently available at dealerships must be retrofitted with speed limiters under the terms of the new agreement.
XLCR Vehicle Management explained: “While drivers can switch off the speed limiter, it reactivates each time the car is started.
“Removing the limiter for higher speeds or better fuel economy can be dangerous and illegal.”
Although the UK has left the EU, it is expected that many manufacturers will still carry the technology in vehicles sold here.
The vehicle leasing specialists stressed that lots of major manufacturers already have ISA technology in their vehicles including some of the biggest brands on the road.

They added: “The ISA system uses GPS and traffic-sign recognition cameras to detect speed limits and adjust the vehicle's speed accordingly.
“The system provides haptic, audio, and visual warnings if the speed limit is exceeded and can be temporarily overridden by pressing hard on the accelerator.
“However, it reactivates with each new start. Many manufacturers, including Citroen, Ford, and Volvo, are already including ISAs in their cars.”
In most vehicles, ISA technology is mostly an audio warning beeping when road users exceed the limits determined by the vehicle.
As Intelligent Speed Assist technology can only be found on new cars, the button to turn off the tool can usually be found through the infotainment screen.
Pressing into settings and scrolling to a ‘Driving Assistance’ tab is usually where the ISA tool can be programmed.
Turning off the mode will prevent any audio signals from sounding when motorists go above the recommended limits.
