The arrest of Himara's mayor, Fredi Beleri

Question for written answer  E-001776/2023
to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 138
Kostas Papadakis (NI)

Just days before democratic elections were held in Himara, the Albanian authorities arrested Fredi Beleri – a member of the Greek minority, who was standing for election as mayor of the city – along with his associates. These arrests were made despite the absence of any evidence to date.

Despite being voted mayor in the municipal elections, Beleri is still being detained at the behest of the Albanian government

in an attempt to hinder the political activities of the Greek minority.

In view of this, what is the position of the EU Vice-President / High Representative regarding calls for the immediate release by the Albanian authorities of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri?
