The Case for a Stylish Kitchen Broom

It's pretty enough that you'll want to keep it out as an accessory. It's practical enough that your kitchen floors will shine.

I believe in the power of visual reminders. I keep my vitamins out on my kitchen counter so I remember to take them. I stick notes on my desk for urgent tasks I shouldn't forget. And I keep a little broom and dustpan in clear sight in my kitchen. I use it daily because it’s there.

My floors are cleaner since I started keeping this broom tucked in the corner of my kitchen. Like my favorite cooking tools and my go-to seasonings, it’s always right on hand so I can grab it easily and don’t have to shove it into an overcrowded cleaning closet when I’m done. And its lovely design means it actually contributes to the aesthetic of my kitchen: The broom is made of a high-quality wood and the red dustpan matches all the other red accents in my pots and pans and appliances. It’s not an eyesore; it brings the look together.

I love that it stands up all on its own. I don’t need to prop it against anything or worry about it crashing down in the middle of the night when my kittens run laps through the kitchen in the dark. And I love that it's tall enough that I don't have to bend over to sweep up crumbs on the floor, which saves my back from any potential strain. I don't even have a traditional dustpan anymore—this one just works so much better.

What I’m saying is that your kitchen broom deserves some consideration. It doesn’t just have to be a practical tool. It can also be a stylish one that's a joy to use; in fact, the more beautiful it is, the more likely you are to keep it within reach. The more it's in reach, the more likely you are to actually use it to keep your floors clean.

Any artfully designed broom and dustpan set that stands up on its own can help you actually enjoy sweeping. Here are six of my favorites.
