When is Prime Day?

Amazon’s ninth annual Prime Day is currently happening until midnight on July 17. The online retailer has deals on all kinds of kitchen items, from appliances to gadgets to housewares. While Prime Day is still touted as one of Amazon’s biggest sales events of the year, anything on your list that you don’t find on sale today might pop up for Prime Big Deal Days in October, which Amazon has offered the past two years as an early alternative Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

What do air fryers do?

Simply put, “air fryers” are really just countertop convection ovens. (If you’re thinking “my regular oven has a convection setting,” we have a guide to utilizing that feature, but the nice thing about air fryers is they’re smaller, so they work much faster.) These gadget continuously circulate the hot air generated inside, which evenly heats and crisps food, hence the term “air fry.” But don’t write off air fryers as beneficiaries of some cynical rebranding. Users report that everything from reheating pizza to perfectly cooking crispy frozen apps and French fries to creating crispy proteins without the soggy mess, are worth the investment. Plus, multifunctional air fryers can also stand in for your microwave or toaster oven with settings for baking, broiling, dehydrating, and rotisserie cooking. If that’s not multi-use enough for you, brands like Instant Pot even make multicookers that have an air frying function, meaning you can save some counter space with one combo unit.

What kind of air fryer should I buy?

There are more air fryers on the market than you shake a fish stick at. So, you need to consider size and shape as well as brand. If you prefer a basic time and temperature programming, then there are plenty of no-frills options like the Cosori Mini. If you’re a more tech-savvy home cook you might opt for a digital air fryer with tons of presets (see: Ninjas and Instants in particular). Then consider how much food you need to fit inside. A 5- to 6-quart air fryer is sufficient for a family of four. Small kitchen? Scale that down to a compact air fryer, 4 quarts or smaller. And bigger families or party hosts might want a dual-basket air fryer for making multiple batches at once.

Even the baskets themselves should be part of your decision-making process. They’re usually either made from solid non-stick material (better for oven-like tasks such as baking or roasting) or mesh, which is harder to clean but totally fine if you’re mostly crisping frozen foods and French fries. And in either case, are they dishwasher-safe?
