The Port of Laredo is the nation’s top port of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border, with El Paso trailing just behind, according to data from the Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness at the University of Texas at El Paso.
In 2023, the Laredo port of entry processed about $320 billion in trade, an increase from 2022 when it processed about $299 billion in trade. The increase was driven largely by the near-shoring trend as more companies shifted manufacturing from Asia to North America to be closer to the U.S. market.
The ports of entry in El Paso, including the Yselta Port of Entry, processed about $98 billion in trade in 2023 – a decrease from $103 billion in 2022.
Mayra Maldonado, executive director of the Hunt Institute, said the value of trade through El Paso has generally remained stagnant.
“I wouldn’t say that it decreased,” Maldonado said. “But there are other factors that we are still assessing on how and why it happened.”
Mexico is now the largest exporter to the U.S., surpassing China and Canada. In 2023, Mexico exported about $475 billion worth of goods to the U.S., or about $1.3 billion a day.
