England must once again battle the curse of ITV to keep their Euro 2024 glory dream alive.

The broadcaster will be screening Wednesday's semi-final against the Netherlands. And - though ITV showed England’s last-16 back-from-the-dead victory over Slovakia - it still lags way behind the BBC in the telly’s lucky league.

Since the 1998 World Cup ITV has broadcast 32 England matches at major tournaments live - and only nine have ended in a Three Lions’ victory. That gives the broadcaster a win record of just 28%. Twelve matches ended in defeat with 11 draws.

ITV has screened many of the nation’s lowest moments including heartbreaking defeats to France and Croatia at the last two World Cups and humiliating Euro 2016 exit at the hands of Iceland.

Going back further they brought us the World Cup penalty shootout losses to Portugal and Argentina both of which occurred after England’s star player was sent off – Wayne Rooney in 2006 and David Beckham in 1998.

Over the same period the BBC’s form when it comes to England matches is far better with 21 wins out of 30. That is a win-percentage of 70%. The Beeb has overseen just seven losses and two draws.

Beeb bosses are even bossing the current tournament. They have screened two England victories - the 1-0 opening group game win against Serbia and Saturday’s nail-biting quarter-final penalty shootout triumph over Switzerland - plus the 1-1 draw against Denmark.

ITV’s sole triumph was against Slovakia. It also screened the 0-0 bore draw against Slovenia. According to football magazine FourFourTwo ITV matches are subject to a 'curse' while the BBC is a 'good luck charm'.
