A woman has been left gobsmacked after finding a box of condoms in her hubby's drawer - despite the fact they "haven't used them for years".

Opening up on Mumsnet, she confessed that while she didn't want to "jump to conclusions", the discovery has resulted in concerns for their relationship - one that was already "rocky". "Why would he put them in his drawer when he knows I put the washing away and could quite likely find them?" she asked.

"I will speak to him but need to get my head straight. Is there ever an innocent reason for him having them?" Although the box appeared to be unopened with an expiry date of August 2027, fellow Mumsnet users told the woman she was right to be suspicious.

"You are in a sexless relationship," one woman spelled out in response. "Your partner has recently bought condoms. Your partner is in a sexual relationship elsewhere. There is literally no other reason for them."

Another chimed in: "It doesn't look innocent at all. If for some reason there is a reasonable explanation (not sure what that could be!) then perhaps it's time to address the lack of intimacy and other issues. It's not a nice way to exist in a relationship, for either of you."

And a third was straight-up savage, writing: "I think I'd be working out the value of the house, and generally being practical about how to organise things in the event that I become a single woman."

A fourth person offered a ray of hope though, suggesting: "I suppose the only exception would be if you have a teenage son and he's planning to give them to him but doesn't want to tell you in case you'll disapprove."

Feeling slightly more positive, the woman who created the thread replied: "We do have a young teenage son. He has no interest in relationships as far as I can see. I can't see DH having those conversations with him but I could be wrong. If that is the reason, I'm wondering why hide them and not tell me."

But after mulling over more advice from her online pals, she updated her post, sharing her heartache: "Time to get my head out of the sand," she admitted. "I was hoping this was innocent. Obviously I'll speak to him to give him a chance to explain. But wanted to prepare myself for any excuses too. So sad.

"What hurts more is that I've given him several chances to leave over the last few years since he's totally disengaged and distanced himself from me. But he's said there is no one else and he doesn't wasn't to leave."
