Fans of Kylie and Dannii Minogue are petitioning for Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece to rename a city laneway in honour of the superstar siblings.

Life-long fan Eliza Day launched an online petition on Monday calling for a CBD laneway to be renamed Minogue Lane, to commemorate the iconic sisters.

'They are undeniably pivotal figures in pop culture,' she told the Herald Sun

'Their contribution to the music industry combined with their unwavering advocacy, love and support for the LGBTQIA+ community makes them deserving.'

Day added she was inspired to start her petition after a street in West Hollywood, California was recently renamed Kylie Minogue Way.

'My first thought was why don’t we have a Minogue Lane in Melbourne? They are kind, warm and generous with their time and they're Melbourne girls at heart.'

Lord Mayor Reece addressed the petition in a statement: 'Melbourne should be so lucky to name one of our iconic laneways after the famed Minogue sisters.

'We recognise the significant contributions Kylie and Dannii have made to our city – both as pop icons and Melburnian ambassadors to the world.'

Unfortunately, the change.org petition does not comply with Victorian Government naming regulations, which doesn't allow locations to be named after living people.

However, band names are allowed and in 2004 a CBD laneway was famously renamed AC/DC Lane in celebration of the legendary Aussie rock band.

Another laneway was dubbed Amphlett Lane in 2015, after the late Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett, who died in 2013.

Kylie Minogue and her sister Dannii are two of Australia's most iconic pop stars, and share similar career trajectories.

Both got their start on a long-running Australian soap opera - Kylie on Neighbours and Dannii on Home and Away - and went on to launch a music career, selling millions of albums in the process.
