England fans were left stunned after footage resurfaced of Ollie Watkins' surprise reaction to John McGinn claiming he wanted England to lose at Euro 2024.

The footage originally shared by Aston Villa on X in March shows the club colleagues discussing their thoughts ahead of the the then upcoming tournament that both were participating in.

Watkins, representing England, and McGinn an important figure in Scotland's ranks both shared wild celebrations together after securing Champions League football for the Clarets next season, but there is no love lost from the more senior figure on the international scene.

The footage prompted some stark reactions on social media after Watkins scored the 90th minute winner for England in Wednesday's Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands.

His brilliant late strike saw England qualify for a second consecutive final in the competition and first on foreign soil as Gareth Southgate's side take on Spain in Berlin on Sunday.

Meanwhile, it was a disappointing campaign for McGinn and Scotland who opened the tournament with a damning 5-1 defeat against hosts Germany before crashing out at the end of the group stage without a win.

Watkins and his Villa team-mate were explaining if they want each other to win their games at Euro 2024, with the England striker saying yes and McGinn somewhat comically stating that he wanted the Three Lions to lose their games.

Starting the exchange, 28-year-old Watkins said: 'I want Ginny [McGinn] to win if we're not playing against them.'

'Do you?' said McGinn appearing surprised. Watkins added: 'Not the competition I mean his game,' with his team-mate sat alongside asking: 'But you want Scotland to win when you're watching Scotland?'.

'If you're playing I don't want you to use,' said Watkins humbly. However, McGinn was keen to show he wasn't in agreement and retorted: 'I would want you to get beat if you were if you were playing for England.'

Watkins was left puzzled as he probed for an explanation with McGinn complaining at the amount of English pundits on televised coverage of games and explaining the two countries shared a rivalry.

Reaction was split online after the footage was reshared on Thursday with one comment stating: 'Watkins actually looked heartbroken by his team mate not wanting him to win.'

Another added: 'Watching this again is such a cringe for the nation. McGinn actually believes he has to support England’s opponents due to media personalities being English also!'

Some did however agree with the Scot as another added: 'McGinn does have a point though. A point that's missed by an awful lot of people it seems.'
