Newt Gingrich attacks Nancy Pelosi for her taste for $12-a-pint ice cream calling it 'most tone-deaf thing I've seen a Speaker do'

  • On Monday, House Speaker Newt Gingrich lashed out at Nancy Pelosi for showing off her drawer filled with expensive ice cream last week
  • He said that Pelosi telling 'Late, Late Show' host James Corden about her ice cream was 'the most tone-deaf thing I've seen a Speaker of the House do'
  • Republicans are griping because Democrats are holding up a new bill that would refill the coffers of the Paycheck Protection Program
  • Gingrich and other Republicans have been trying to characterize Pelosi's ice cream showcase as a 'let them eat cake' moment
  • Democrats are urging Republicans to include funding for hospitals and state governments in any new package

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich again lashed out at current Speaker Nancy Pelosi for what Republicans are trying to characterize as a 'let them eat cake' moment.

Pelosi had showed off a selection of pricey ice creams on James Corden's 'Late Late Show' last Monday, while Democrats were refusing to refill the coffers of the Paycheck Protection Program without additional funds for state governments and hospitals.

'I thought the notion of Nancy Pelosi holding up aid to small businesses while she stood in front of her two very expensive refrigerators and talked about how she loves to have her $11.75-a-pint ice cream to comfort her is the most tone-deaf thing I've seen a Speaker of the House do,' Gingrich said on 'Fox & Friends' Monday morning

A week ago, Pelosi appeared on Corden's show and told the comedian she was devouring chocolate ice cream and candy 'as much as possible.'

Pelosi showed off a collection of Jeni's ice creams in her freezer drawer.

A single pint goes for $12, while a six-pack, like the 'emergency chocolate stash,' goes for a slightly cheaper $68 per case.

She also had Dove and Talenti brand treats.

'I don't know what I would have done if ice cream had not been invented,' Pelosi mused.

The clip was perfect ammunition for Republicans.

The Trump campaign's rapid response director Steve Guest latched onto the clip Tuesday pointing out that Pelosi was 'eating $13-a-pint ice cream out of her $24,000 fridge.'

'The Paycheck Protection Program ran out of money this morning because Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, blocked the necessary $250 billion replenishment for the program that Congressional Republicans tried to deliver,' the Republican National Committee chimed in Wednesday. 'Now "Nancy Antoinette" has to explain to America why she chose to show off her luxury refrigerators and $13-dollar a pint ice cream collection from her chateau in San Francisco instead of funding the Paycheck Protection Program which has served millions of jobs all across the country.'

Gingrich has spent the last few days chiding Pelosi over the ice cream.

On Sunday, he tweeted an image of Pelosi and her treats and Trump with his trucks, suggesting the president showed better leadership skills by applauding truck drivers' essential work last week at the White House.

New funding for the PPP remains stalled, though Pelosi's No. 2 Steny Hoyer indicated on Sunday that House members should be prepared to come back to Washington to vote on a bill as early as Wednesday.

Trump and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin both said Sunday that a deal was close to coming together.

The sticking point that remained was that Democrats wanted additional funding for states, which Republicans opposed.

Gingrich, as Speaker, has had his own optics problem in the past.

Mainly, he admitted in 2007 that while he was leading an impeachment effort against President Clinton in 1998 - an impeachment that centered around Clinton lying about an affair he was having with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern - Gingrich, too, was being unfaithful to his wife.
