On April 8th, 2024, at 2:07 pm, Chicago will be at the maximum point within the eclipse zone, with 94% of the sun covered by the moon. Observing the eclipse provides opportunities to see science in action and connect future generations of explorers to the awe and wonder of Earth and Space Sciences. To support schools in instructional planning and recommendations for safely engaging students in observing the eclipse, the Department of STEM has prepared this guidance. Included in the guidance are links to NASAs safety guidelines for safely viewing the eclipse, specifications for approved eclipse eyewear, as well as a copy of this Solar Eclipse Viewing Consent Form that must be signed by parents for students participating in any outdoor viewing events. CHICAGO – Students across Chicago Public Schools (CPS) participate in STEM learning every day, many are taking part in special activities today as part of National STEM Day. The November 8 celebration comes as the District reminds families that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) concepts are accessible to all students and that in-demand STEM careers are also within reach. CPS continues to expand STEM learning opportunities inside and outside the classroom with work-based learning and early college and certification opportunities, allowing students to participate in STEM learning and apply it in authentic, real-world settings.
