The 12 Best Glycolic Acid Cleansers That Will Make Your Skin Glow

This exfoliating ingredient can lead to smooth, radiant skin.

There are plenty of chemical exfoliants, but none quite as beloved—or universally effective—as glycolic acid. The alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) is derived from sugarcane and offers a litany of different benefits, working on multiple layers of the skin. “It’s one of the most potent alpha-hydroxy acids that help to exfoliate superficially while also stimulating deeper collagen production,” explains Dr. Shereene Idriss, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. In short, it’s great for fading spots and evening skin tone while smoothing fine lines in the long term.

You can find this ingredient in everything from masks to serums to moisturizers, but glycolic acid-based cleansers offer unique benefits. “In addition to being ideal for sensitive skin due to the short contact time, they’re also a good option for those who have dry skin, as the ingredient is even hydrating in of itself,” explains Dr. Idriss. And if you’re starting to use a retinoid, you can add them into your routine to minimize the risk of irritation, she adds. Top tip: if you don’t have sensitive skin and want to capitalize on the ingredient’s effects, you can even let the cleanser sit on your skin for five to 10 minutes before rinsing. If all that piqued your interest, check out the best glycolic acid cleansers we love as a gentle addition to your skincare routine.

What We Like
  • Moisturizes with glycerin

  • Lightweight gel texture

  • Foams up nicely

What to Consider
  • A little on the runny side

Key Ingredients: Glycolic acid, glycerin | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 6.8 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

This lightweight gel is extra-refreshing and Byrdie editors swear by it. The glycolic acid in the formula helps gently exfoliate, while glycerin in the mix delivers intense hydration, leaving your skin perfectly balanced. We love the lightly foaming lather that helps remove dirt and oil without stripping your skin. It will work on all skin types but it's especially great for oily and acne-prone skin. The runny consistency takes a bit of getting used to, but we think the payoff is worth it.

What We Like
  • Unclogs pores

  • Not overly drying

  • Includes aloe extract to soothe skin

What to Consider
  • Can cause tightness if used too often

Key Ingredients: Glycolic and salicylic acids | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses | Size: 6.7 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

It can be tricky finding a glycolic acid cleanser at the drugstore, making this steal of a deal even more noteworthy. The formula, which comes in a well-sized squeeze tube, combines glycolic acid with salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid that's great at dissolving the oil, dirt, and debris that clogs pores. Aloe extract ensures it’s never too drying (however, using it too often may make your skin feel a bit tight). We love that it's also fragrance-free and allergy-tested—which our sensitive-skinned friends will appreciate.

What We Like
  • Includes four different AHAs

  • Skin feels smoother

  • Helps control oil

What to Consider
  • Can be drying

Key Ingredients: Glycolic, lactic, citric, malic acids | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 6 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Glycolic acid is just one of four alpha hydroxy acids at work in this face wash; there are also citric acid, malic acid, and lactic acid in the mix (all gentle enough to be used collectively). That means it does a stellar job of exfoliating, dissolving dead skin cells, and leaving skin feeling super smooth. As if that weren’t enough, jojoba beads offer some extra (gentle) physical exfoliation, while salicylic acid in the formula helps combat excess oil. It is on the pricier side, but considering all the exfoliating power, we think it's worth a try.

What We Like
  • Gently exfoliates with plant-based ingredients

  • Helps to clear breakouts and uneven skin tone

  • Works on both face and body

What to Consider
  • Not for those who are sensitive to fragrance

Active Ingredients: Glycolic acid, sage and marshmallow extract, aloe vera | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 6 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Affordable and effective, this gel formula foams up beautifully. The namesake ingredients help retexturize and smooth the skin. It also boasts a litany of plant-based actives such as marshmallow extract, chamomile, and sage, so it can help balance and smooth the skin while also fighting inflammation. We love how accessible this product is, but it does have a fragrance, so if you're sensitive to that, this one might not be for you.

What We Like
  • Feels creamy and hydrating

  • No sulfates or fragrance

  • Great for sensitive skin types

What to Consider
  • Packaging could be improved

Key Ingredients: Glycolic acid, glycerin | Skin Type: Sensitive | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 6.7 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

Pretty much all of this brand's products are focused around glycolic acid, so we knew we had to consider it for this list (and we weren't disappointed). We like this pick for its creamy texture and that it relies on a fairly mild concentration, 3.4% of glycolic acid, making it great for dry and sensitive skin types alike. In related news, it’s also sulfate- and fragrance-free.

What We Like
  • Deeply cleanses without stripping the skin

  • A little goes a long way

  • Calming scent

What to Consider
  • Pump head can break

Active Ingredients: Activated charcoal, artichoke leaf extract | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Glycolic acid is our go-to cleanser ingredient for oily skin types, thanks to its pore-unclogging prowess. Here it’s paired with charcoal, an ingredient thought to aid in purifying the pores (though more research is needed to back up this claim). It's also worth noting it contains anti-aging powerhouse artichoke leaf extract. We love how it gently warms up as you massage it onto the skin, making the cleansing experience feel extra-luxurious. It's gentle enough to use every day, and should promote a more balanced complexion (and smaller-looking pores).

What We Like
  • Unclogs pores with two acids

  • Helps fade dark spots

  • Protects from free radical damage

What to Consider
  • Can be a little drying

Key Ingredients: Salicylic and glycolic acids | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses | Size: 6.8 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

Battling blemishes? Meet your new BFF. Think of glycolic acid and salicylic acid as the peanut butter and jelly of the skincare world, a dynamic duo that works perfectly in sync. Here, they’re all it takes to unclog pores, minimize oil, and even fade dark spots left over from pimples past. It can be a bit drying, especially if your skin is already on the dry side. If that sounds like you, we suggest using this product every other day or every few days.

What We Like
  • Contains antioxidants

  • Hyaluronic acid helps moisturize skin

  • No residue left behind

What to Consider
  • Not ideal for acne-prone skin

Key Ingredients: Blueberry extract, hyaluronic acid | Skin Type: All | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 1, 5.4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This formula addresses several complexion concerns at once. Unlike most other options on this list, glycolic acid is not the superstar here, it's just one of a more varied cast of ingredients. Yes, there’s glycolic acid for exfoliating purposes, but there’s also hyaluronic acid for hydration, and antioxidant-rich blueberry extract to protect your skin from environmental stressors. We love the subtle fruity scent and how it rinses off completely cleanly. It may not be the best pick for acne-prone skin though since it's on the gentler, more moisturizing side.

What We Like
  • Soothes skin with cucumber extract

  • Leaves skin looking radiant

  • Oil-free

What to Consider
  • Has an unpleasant scent

Active Ingredients: Glycolic acid, cucumber extract | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 6.8 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This Amazon fan-favorite has somewhat of a cult-like following, and for good reasons. The oil-free formula combines glycolic acid with a long list of natural ingredients—cucumber extract, organic chamomile, green tea extract, willow bark, and many more. Collectively, they can help exfoliate, cleanse, and even minimize the look of lines and wrinkles. Just look at any of the glowing (pun intended) rave reviews that refer to the product as ‘miraculous,’ ‘life-changing,’ and ‘best’...you get the picture. The only negatives we saw were some reviewers didn't vibe with the scent.

What We Like
  • Strong, effective formula

  • Boosts radiance in the complexion

  • Contains soothing ingredients to balance the skin

What to Consider
  • Not for sensitive skin

Key Ingredients: Glycolic acid, allantoin | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Fair warning, this option, another editor favorite, is best reserved for glycolic acid veterans who really want to up the ante. True to its name, it touts a whopping 27% concentration of glycolic acid for some mega-exfoliating and skin-tone evening effects. That said, there’s also a trio of soothing ingredients—allantoin, aloe extract, and chamomile—to help minimize the likelihood of any irritation.

What We Like
  • Creamy, gentle formula

  • Foams up nicely

  • Leaves skin smooth

What to Consider
  • Strong scent

Key Ingredients: AHAs, papaya enzymes | Skin Type: All | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Product purists will appreciate that this formula relies on all kinds of natural ingredients. Glycolic and lactic acids are paired with papaya enzymes and pomegranate extract to achieve an ideal mix of gentle exfoliation and hydration that makes this cleanser perfect for everyday use. As the name suggests, it goes on creamy, but bubbles up nicely, and (not that appearance really matters) but we’re also obsessed with how pretty it looks.

What We Like
  • Chemical and physical exfoliation

  • Available in multiple sizes

  • Skin left feeling smooth

What to Consider
  • Can be drying

Key Ingredients: Salicylic, lactic, glycolic acids, sodium PCA | Skin Type: Oily, acne-prone | Benefits: Exfoliates, cleanses, hydrates | Size: 2, 6.8 oz | Cruelty-Free: No

This derm-developed choice is well worth every penny. It contains chemical and physical exfoliants to act as a one-two punch to the dirt and grime that builds up in your pores. Credit a litany of different exfoliants (glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acids, and biodegradable jojoba beads). But we also appreciate the addition of sodium PCA, which helps attract moisture to keep skin plump and elastic. After all, you need your skin barrier to function properly.

What to Look for in a Glycolic Acid Cleanser

  • Concentration: While not all formulas disclose this on the packaging, Dr. Idriss says it’s best to look for a concentration of anywhere from 4% to 10%. Pro tip: If that's not listed, pay attention to where glycolic acid falls on the ingredient label. The higher up on the list, the more of it is in the product.
  • pH: Again, this may require some research into the product, but Dr. Idriss says you ideally want a glycolic acid with a pH of 4 or less as that's closest to the pH of natural skin.
  • Extra Ingredients: Glycolic acid increases cell turnover in the skin so it’s often combined with soothing and hydrating ingredients to help it be better tolerated. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are both known for their water-binding properties and pair well with glycolic acid, as do urea and aloe.
  • Texture: Glycolic acid cleansers come in three main textures: cream, gel, and foaming. Foaming cleansers are generally better suited to oily skin types and are great at cleaning deep within the pores. They often contain an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate, however, which can be irritating to more sensitive skin types. If that sounds like you, opt for a cream cleanser containing soothing natural oils and emulsifiers. Gel cleansers, on the other hand, create more of a coating across the skin. This makes them a lighter option for normal, combination, and oily skin types.
  • Other Acids: If your skin isn’t super sensitive, consider choosing a face wash that contains other acids. Glycolic plays nicely with other AHAs such as lactic and citric acid, as well as BHAs like salicylic acid.
FAQ
  • How does glycolic acid exfoliate?

Glycolic acid is an anti-inflammatory chemical exfoliator with antioxidant effects, which allow it to increase exfoliation of the outermost layer of skin and increase skin cell turnover. This means that you can see a noticeable difference with regular use.

  • Is glycolic acid good for oily and acne-prone skin?

“The exfoliative properties of this active acid can help to reduce a buildup of dead skin cells which can help to improve clogged pores,” says Jonquille Chantrey, M.D., a surgeon and beauty scientist. This makes glycolic acid especially good for oily and blemish-prone skin that's congested.

  • Can I use glycolic acid cleanser every day?

“The frequency of use depends upon your individual skin type,” advises Dr. Chantrey. “The active strength of the acid is another key variable which will influence tolerability”. (Most glycolic acid concentrates start from 5% and go up to 20%). “A glycolic acid cleanser can be used every day as long as it doesn’t contain a very high percentage of acid and it’s not active in its state—so you don’t put an acid directly onto the skin,” advises Dr. Unnati Dessai, an aesthetic doctor and dermatologist at Edition Clinic. “Products that have an acid microencapsulated into them are much more skin-friendly and less likely to cause irritation.

  • Can you use glycolic acid every day if you have sensitive skin?

“If you have very sensitive skin and you find that you react to glycolic acid every day, then you should stop," says Dr. Dessai. "Likewise, you wouldn’t use glycolic acid on very red and angry-looking skin. Most people, however, can tolerate glycolic acid in their routine every day. If you have other skin concerns, such as acne, you might want to add in other ingredients safely such as a vitamin A or salicylic acid.”
