I imagined the upshot was going to be the opposite: the more low-value coins that are left behind, the stronger the evidence that people (at least those people well-off enough to fly) see pennies and nickels as an annoyance that they’re happy to shed. Personally, whenever I get pennies in change, I leave them anywhere I can ASAP rather than letting my pockets fill up with near-useless dead weight.

    The trend wd then look lke a good argument for *discontinuing* small coins, not for continuing them.
