Brokerage boat of the month: the 73m explorer that starred on the silver screen

3 June 2024 • Written by Nick Jeffery

Every month we place a spotlight on one of the best-designed brokerage boats that have joined the market, changed agents or have had a significant price drop. For May, the 73.2-metre explorer yacht Planet Nine is our Brokerage Boat of the Month.

The expedition yacht, delivered by Admiral in 2018, boasts an ice-classed steel hull and a military-looking aluminium superstructure. British designer Tim Heywood created her exterior styling, while the light, airy and contemporary interior design is courtesy of Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi. The yacht is best known in the yacht industry for her high-capacity cruising credentials, but some may also recognise her as the yacht that starred in the blockbuster Tenet.

Lying in the South of France, Planet Nine is now asking €79,500,000 She is listed with Stuart Larsen of Fraser.

BOAT's brokerage editor says:

Planet Nine demonstrates excellent collaboration between exterior and interior designers. Built to proper standards for helicopter use (no "touch & go") and ocean exploration (ice class), she looks purposeful and elegant. People flow between interior and exterior works, thanks to large openings and windows, while two master suites and one VIP are positioned high for good visibility of the planet.

The broker says:

Stuart Larsen of Fraser said: "Since her launch in 2018 Planet Nine has proven to be an extremely tough yet versatile yacht with remarkable performance. She has not stopped cruising in her first five years and among some of her notable highlights was a trip to Antarctica with a return up the West Coast of South America to the Mediterranean, all in one southern summer season. With eight guest staterooms, staff cabins, a garage for a helicopter, ice class, dynamic positioning, large tenders, beach club and an elevator, she has every amenity possible. She has proven herself to be a popular charter yacht and with a six-month refit just finished with an investment in excess of €5 million, Planet Nine is ready to head off for more global cruising."

Early profile from Tim Heywood Designs who named her The Nato 70 Project.
The indoor-outdoor saloon genuinely feels like one big space with the teak decking flowing out to the decks.

Key features:

  • Ice classed and LY3 compliant
  • Commercial helipad, for 8-tonne helicopter, and hangar
  • Large spaces with massive windows and opening doors
  • Two beach clubs, both for use in warm and cool climates
  • Guest elevator servicing all four decks
  • Easy guest flow from interior to exterior

What makes her special?

Tim Heywood said: "The design of ’Project Nato’, which became Planet Nine, was conceived for an experienced and enthusiastic client who wanted a world cruising, ice class vessel, one of the early, purpose built, explorer yachts.

She was designed as a serious, all purpose, helicopter carrier with a fully enclosing hanger and refuelling facilities.

The exterior style is in the militaristic vein, that I had conceived for the yachts Ice and Kogo and further developed for Planet Nine resulting in a masculine, purposeful and minimalistic style that, in my view, still looks both contemporary and timeless."

Price comparison:

Looking at BOATPro data with comparable yachts for sale, it is apparent that Planet Nine, listed by Fraser, is in a class of her own. Similar-priced yachts include the 79.5-metre Silver Edge, designed by Espen Øino and for sale with Fraser, asking $75,000,000 or the 74-metre Global, also designed by Espen Oeino, for sale with IYC, asking €79,000,000. Explorer vessels, for a lower budget, include the rebuilt trawler 46-metre Scintilla Maris, asking €19,250,000 with Burgess. A new-build 68-metre proposal, named Hawk Ranger, is being marketed by Ocean Independence for €49,500,000.
