Harlan Krumholz
Harlan Krumholz is a cardiologist, educator, and scientist at Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital. He is the Harold H. Hines, Jr. Professor of Medicine and is the founder and Director of the Yale Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE), one of the nation’s first and most prominent research groups working to improve health and health care. Before joining the Yale faculty in 1992, Dr. Krumholz received a BS (Biology) from Yale, an MD from Harvard Medical School, and a Masters in Health Policy and Management (SM) from the Harvard University School of Public Health.
Dr. Krumholz’s work has ranged from improving the quality and outcomes of clinical decisions and healthcare delivery strategies and policies, to eliminating disparities, to avoiding wasteful practices. He conducted studies that directly led to improvements in the use of guideline-based medications, the timeliness of care for acute myocardial infarction, the quality and amount of information available to patients who are making decisions about clinical options, the public reporting of outcomes measures, and the national focus on reducing the risk of readmission. In many cases, these studies required the development of new methodological approaches or novel strategies for implementation. He has published more than 1300 scientific articles, and has 268,860 citations (Google Scholar) and an h-index >200. His recent work has focused on collaborative efforts with applied mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, biologists, informaticists, and outcomes researchers to define advanced methods for using high-dimensional data to better characterize individuals with regard to risk and treatment response.
Dr. Krumholz co-founded the Yale University Open Data Access (YODA) Project, designed to increase access to clinical research data and promote their use to generate new knowledge. He directed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at Yale from 1996–2017 and serves as Director Emeritus of the National Clinician Scholars Program. He received the Friendship Award from China for his contributions toward the creation of a national cardiovascular research platform and a quality improvement network. He is a co-founder of HugoHealth, a patient-centric platform to engage people as partners in research and facilitate the secure movement of digital health data, and co-founder of Refactor Health, an enterprise healthcare AI-augmented data management company. He is also a co-founder of medRxiv, a non-profit preprint server for the medical and health sciences.
Dr. Krumholz has been honored by membership in the National Academy of Medicine, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He was named a Distinguished Scientist of the American Heart Association and received their Clinical Research Prize. He founded the American Heart Association’s Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Council and its annual conference—and served as founding editor of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. He was a founding Governor of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. He also served as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health.
