Apprenticeships

  • About the programme

    This 18-month programme is designed to help you to get started in your career whilst studying towards a level 4 qualification. 

    Fact box

    To apply for the Level 4 Apprenticeship Development Programme you must meet the below entry requirements:

    • have a minimum of five GCSEs at C (4) and above (including English and maths),
    • have or are predicted to have at least 72 UCAS points from up to three A levels (or equivalent)]

    What to expect

    We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank of England. You will get an idea of the breath of specialist roles here as well as receiving training sessions which focus on essential skills. 

    You will be enrolled on a part time level 4 qualification which provide you with knowledge that complements the skills and invaluable on-the-job learning that you will gain whilst working here.

    We want to support you to succeed so you will be given sufficient time and support to balance your studies with work. As part of the apprenticeship you are allocated 20% of your working hours to study. You will also have the support of your line manager and our Future Talent team will also be on hand to support you throughout the programme.

  • About the programme

    This 36-month programme is designed to help you to get started in your career whilst studying towards a fully funded degree (degree studies can take up to 48 months).

    To apply for the Degree Apprenticeship Development Programme you must meet the below entry requirements:

    • have a minimum of five GCSEs at C (4) and above (including English and maths). For the Professional Economist stream you will need GCSE Maths at grade B (or 7).
    • have or are predicted to have achieved three A-Levels at BBB (or equivalent). 

    What to expect

    We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank of England. You will get an idea of the breath of specialist roles there are across the organisation. You will also receive training sessions which focus on essential skills. 

    You will be enrolled on a part time undergraduate degree at a reputable university. Your course will provide you with knowledge that complements the skills and invaluable on-the-job learning that you will gain whilst working here.

    We want to support you to succeed so you will be given sufficient time and support to balance your studies with work. As part of the apprenticeship you are allocated 20% of your working hours to study. Internships and placements

  • About the programme

    This internship is designed for students in their first year of their undergraduate degree. It runs for 6 weeks over the summer before you start your second year of study.

    • Be in your first year of your undergraduate degree.
    • Expecting a 2.1 degree classification.
    • Achieved 120 UCAS points from 3 A-Levels (or equivalent).

    We’ll assign you to a team where you will work on a specific project. You’ll learn more about our role in the economy and gain ‘on-the-job’ skills. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn more by attending talks and networking events.

    If your performance is outstanding, we may consider you for a place on our Penultimate Year Internship or Industrial Placement program.

  • About the programme

    This internship is designed for students in their penultimate year of their undergraduate degree. It runs for 8 weeks over the summer before you start your final year.

  • About the programme

    This internship is designed for students in their final year of their undergraduate degree, or first year of a 2-year masters. It runs for 8 weeks over the summer before you start your masters, or go into your final year of your masters.

    Looking to build your network and find out more about graduate opportunities. To apply for this internship you must meet the below entry requirements:

    • You should be in the final year of your undergraduate degree and planning to study a masters in Economics or Finance upon completion. Or you should be in your first year of a 2 year masters in Economics or Finance.
    • Expecting or have achieved a 2.1 degree classification in your undergraduate degree.
    • Achieved 120 UCAS points from 3 A-Levels (or equivalent).

    How could you develop?

    We’ll assign you to a team where you will work on a specific project, working closely with economists or analysts to collect and analyse data.

    You’ll learn more about our role in the economy and gain ‘on-the-job’ skills. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn more by attending talks and networking events.

  • About the programme

    This programme is designed for Black Heritage students in their first or penultimate year of their undergraduate degree. If successful, you will be awarded with funding of at least £5,000 towards living costs for 1 year at university. You will also be offered a paid internship for 6-8 weeks depending on your year of study (first years 6 weeks, penultimate year 8 weeks).

    To apply for the Black Future Leaders Sponsorship Programme you must meet the below entry requirements:

    • Be in your first or penultimate year of your undergraduate degree.
    • Expecting a 2.1 degree classification.
    • Be of Black/mixed Black Heritage background.
    • Have a household income of less than £50,778 a year.

    How could you develop? 

    We’ll assign you to a team where you will work on a specific project. You’ll learn more about our role in the economy and gain ‘on-the-job’ skills.

    You’ll also have a bespoke development programme including mentorship, a variety of senior talks and networking events.

    If your performance is outstanding, we may consider you for a further internship or a place on our Graduate programme.

  • About the programme

    This is a 13 month programme designed for undergraduates with a placement year built into their course.

    To apply for the Industrial Placement Programme you must meet the below entry requirements:

    • Be studying any undergraduate degree that allows you to do a placement year (starting from next summer).
    • Expecting a 2.1 degree classification. You must not already have a degree. Specific degree requirements for Economist stream.
    • Achieved 120 UCAS points from 3 A-Levels (or equivalent).

    What to expect

    We’ve designed this programme to help talented people gain valuable work experience at the heart of the UK’s financial system. 

    First of all, we’ll introduce you to the different types of work we do. Then, you’ll work in a team, getting involved in our policy, research and operational work. You’ll also attend regular training and events with your fellow Industrial Placement colleagues.

    If your performance is outstanding, we may consider you for a place on our Graduate Programme or Postgraduate Internship.

    If you are interested in this programme, we will ask you to choose from the following streams:

    Operations

    This is our generalist stream, and stream is open to students from all degree disciplines. Hiring areas can vary year on year, however in 2024 we recruited into the following areas:

    • Authorisations, Regtech and International Supervision
    • People Operations 
    • Governors Offices

    Data

    If you’re interested in data, this stream is for you. Our data scientists engage with audiences and demonstrate insights that make us more agile, innovative and effective. If you apply to this stream, you’ll need to complete an online Excel test as part of the assessment centre.

    Hiring areas can vary year on year, however in 2024 we recruited into the following areas: 

    • Data Analytics Transformation
    • Supervisory Risk Specialists.

    Economics

    If you’re studying an economics or finance degree, this stream might be ideal for you. If you apply to this stream, you’ll need to complete an online Excel test as part of the assessment centre.

    Technology

    If you’re interested in gaining hands-on experience working with our technical experts and getting involved in our projects, this stream could be for you. You don’t need a degree in computer science to apply. 

    You would work in our Technology division and your work could involve:

    • providing technology support to colleagues across our organisation
    • understanding their needs and suggesting technological solutions
    • developing and presenting reports on change projects

    Supervision

    This stream involves supervising  financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies. This stream is open to students from all degree disciplines.

    What to expect

    We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank of England. You will get an idea of the range of specialist roles there are across the organisation. You will also receive training sessions which focus on essential skills to develop as a central banker. If you are driven and intent on learning and building a career this could be a good option for you.

    In the first 12 months you will take part in a foundation year covering the breadth of work of the Bank of England. In year 2, you will have the opportunity to study for a masters (or equivalent level) qualification through the apprenticeship levy.

    To apply for the Actuarial Development Programme you must meet the below entry requirements:

    • Expecting or have achieved a 2.1 degree in a numerical subject. 
    • Achieved 120 UCAS points from 3 A-Levels (or equivalent), with Maths at Grade B or above.
    • Have less than two years relevant work experience.

    What to expect

    We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank of England. You’ll learn the business and technical skills you’ll need as you start your career. You’ll have the opportunity to work with the firms we regulate to make them safer and sounder. 

    As part of your role, you’ll learn to assess risks, prepare reports and hold firms accountable. You’ll also qualify as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. We’ll support you through your professional studies with study leave, funding for study and a salary increase as you progress on the programme.

  • About the programme

    This 30-month programme is designed for students looking to gain on-the-job experience at the heart of the UK’s Central Bank, whilst working toward qualifying through a graduate solicitor apprenticeship.

    To apply for the Trainee Solicitor Development Programme, you must meet the below entry requirements’:

    • GCSE English and Maths at grade C (4) or above, or English and Maths Functional Skills at pass

    Predicted or achieved one of the following:

    • 2.1 UK law degree; or
    • 2.1 non-law degree plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL);
    • or law degree from a non-UK jurisdiction plus a PGDL.
    • have not already completed LPC or SQE1
    • are a UK citizen or you hold another residence status which meets the apprenticeship funding criteria set out by the Education and Skills Funding Agency
    • comply with any Solicitors Regulation Authority character and suitability requirements

    If you hold qualifications from educational institutions outside of the UK, you may need a statement of comparability.

    We ask that any of the above criteria was met from 2021 onwards.

    What to expect

    You will receive a bespoke induction and training programme for the Bank’s trainee solicitors as well as access to a wide range of training opportunities within the Legal Directorate. In addition to receiving training from colleagues in Legal Directorate, you will regularly receive training from experts from across the wider Bank as well as external speakers from the Government, other UK regulators such as the Financial Conduct Authority, overseas authorities, and the private sector.

    You will be exposed to a unique combination of public and private law issues. We work on legal matters related to:

    • financial services regulation, 
    • banking and payments, 
    • insolvency and restructuring, 
    • litigation, and 
    • the UK’s central bank. 

    How could you develop?

    On the programme you will:

    • A paid-for course at the University of Law to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE1 and SQE2).
    • spend 20% of your working week studying with the University of Law (ULaw) and 80% of your week working within our Legal Directorate.
    • You will have the opportunity to qualify as a solicitor at the UK’s central bank and you can earn as you learn.
    • Receive study leave around exam periods.
    • Complete a mix of six and twelve-month rotations across three or more divisions of the Legal Directorate – giving you experience in Central Banking, Financial Stability, Enforcement and Litigation, Insurance and Deposit-takers, and EU and International.
    • Have access to a wide range of induction and training opportunities and support from a highly experienced legal team.

    After passing your SQE and completing work experience you will be eligible to become a solicitor registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (subject to meeting relevant character and suitability requirements). At this point, we would welcome you to apply for jobs in the Bank of England as a newly qualified lawyer.

PhDs

  • About the programme

    This internship is designed for PhD students looking to carry out innovative, policy-relevant research, and to find out more about what it is like to work in a policy institution.

    To apply for this internship you will need to be currently studying for a PhD in any subject relevant to central bank policymaking.  

    What to expect

    This programme will offer you an invaluable opportunity to gain experience in economic analysis, policy making and research, at a central bank. 

    You will have the opportunity to work on a live research project, working with Bank of England researchers. You will see firsthand how research is conducted and utilised within a policymaking institution.

    While your exact research topic will be at the discretion of the Bank, we will seek to align it with your research interests and skills and give you scope to shape the project. You will be given an opportunity to present your research, either your own existing projects or your internship project, and engage with researchers and policymakers from around the Bank.

  • About the programme

    We are looking for recent PhD graduates with a desire to carry out and publish innovative, policy-relevant research, and to contribute to live central bank policymaking. 

    What to expect

    This is a permanent position, of which the first three years are spent on the PhD Research Programme. 

    Researchers on the programme work within one of our policy areas, and spend at least 50% of their time producing, publishing and disseminating research that is relevant to the Bank of England’s policy and research agendas. 

    Our large research community includes researchers from a range of disciplines, with a common interest in issues relevant to central bank and public policymaking. 

    Our research economists enjoy a rich and stimulating environment, have close engagement with policymakers, and make a key contribution to policy analysis.
