NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — An air quality alert has been issued for much of the New York City area on Sunday as RealFeel temperatures brush the lower 100s, leading into several high-temperature days at the beginning of this week.

The state departments of environmental conservation and health have issued an air quality health advisory for ground-level ozone in the NYC metro area, including Rockland and Westchester counties, and all of Long Island.

Indices are between 101 and 105, meaning that the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, and the National Weather Service New York stated that the advisory is in place through 11 p.m.

Dense fog has taken over the eastern portions of Long Island and Connecticut, according to the NWS NY. The agency warned to travel slowly and leave space between cars while driving.

NYC cooling centers are open on Sunday, including 44 NYC Public Schools in the stead of libraries (which resume Sunday service on July 14). Older Adult Centers/Senior Centers are open for the weekend as cooling Adult Centers. They can be found at the city’s cooling center locator; for more information, call 311 or visit the city's “Beat the Heat” campaign page for heat safety tips.

Due to a heat advisory that was issued Saturday, NYC Parks extended the hours of Olympic and intermediate-sized outdoor pools, keeping them open until 8 p.m. for the entire weekend. Find a pool nearby on the NYC Parks website.

Saturday will see a mix of clouds and sun amid the heat and uncomfortable humidity, AccuWeather said. The high will be 89, but RealFeels will remain in the mid and upper 90s.

A heavy thunderstorm will hit in a few spots late in the afternoon and evening, and AccuWeather said that flooding downpours and gusty winds are possible.

The night will be mostly cloudy, warm and humid and drop to a low of 75, but the heat will ramp up again on Sunday with a high of 91. RealFeels will be in the upper 90s, though it will be a touch less humid.
