NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — The hot and humid weather that has engulfed the New York City area will continue through the weekend and into next week through spots of thunderstorms, according to AccuWeather.

A Heat Advisory is in effect through Sunday night for New York City, New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. An Air Quality Alert was also issued for most of the metro area until Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service, "A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time."

NYC officials have been promoting the city’s “Beat the Heat” campaign to provide residents with resources to stay safe in extreme heat, which Mayor Eric Adams said is the “deadliest weather” the city experiences. According to NYC 311, 350 New Yorkers died of preventable heat-related illnesses last year.

City agencies are promoting cooling centers across the city for those who do not have air conditioning. Find the location of a cooling center near you here.

Sunday will bring little relief as the sun beats down with some clouds on another hot and humid day. The high is expected to be 94, with RealFeels near 100 in the afternoon.

AccuWeather said that late-day or evening thunderstorms could produce flooding downpours, damaging winds and hail before the late-night low of 75.

While humidity is expected to be down, highs will approach 90 in the city on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but the workweek should end in the low-to-mid 80s to welcome in July.
