NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — With New York City beaches open as of 10 a.m. Saturday, people are flocking outdoors to celebrate the holiday weekend in the daytime heat with friends and family. Temperatures will be warm for the weekend proper, but scattered showers will culminate in a holiday thunderstorm on Monday that will cool down the city.

Beachgoers will see sunshine mixed with some clouds on Saturday afternoon, with a high in the 70s on the shore. In the city, the high will be near 80. AccuWeather said that some of the western suburbs can expect a late afternoon or evening thunderstorm, previewing what's to come on Monday.

Saturday night will be mostly cloudy with a shower or thunderstorm dropping the low to 62.

The rain will give way for a short time on Sunday to periods of sun and clouds as the daytime high hits 81 in the city and stays in the low to mid-70s along the coast. There will be a stray thunderstorm in spots throughout the afternoon, AccuWeather said.

Showers will turn into a heavy thunderstorm on Memorial Day, mainly in the afternoon and evening. The clouds and rain will make the holiday less warm than the weekend, with a high of 72.

AccuWeather warns that any thunderstorm can produce damaging winds, downpours and hail, and that travel conditions in the NYC area will be poor during the storm.

Looking at the beginning of the shortened work week, AccuWeather said that the sun will break through on Tuesday for a breezy and warmer day with few clouds and a high of 83.

But the respite from rain will be short lived, the forecaster said, with some showers hitting the NYC area on Wednesday and dropping the high back to the mid-70s.
