NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- The New York City area was sweltering Monday on the fourth day of a heat wave that has pushed highs into the 90s and the heat index to nearly 100 degrees.

NYC and much of the rest of the area is under a Heat Advisory until 8 p.m. Monday. An Air Quality Advisory is also in effect for the five boroughs, Westchester and Rockland County until 11 p.m.

The high reached 95 degrees in Central Park at 1:43 p.m. on Monday, making it the hottest day of the year so far in the park.

The stifling temps began last week, with Central Park entering an official heat wave—three days over 90 degrees—on Sunday, according to AccuWeather. Friday's high was 90, Saturday's was 92 and Sunday's was 93.

This is the second heat wave of the past month after a "long duration" heat wave engulfed the boroughs in mid-June. The heat is impacting the entire area on Monday, with highs in the 90s in Newark, Hartford and Poughkeepsie.

For New Yorkers looking to beat the heat, NYC has a map of cooling centers, as well as a map of places to hydrate, refresh and stay in the shade. For more, visit nyc.gov/beattheheat or call 311. Here's a list of beaches and outdoor pools in the city. State parks and beaches are also open. Here are cooling centers in New York State, New Jersey and Connecticut.

An Air Quality Hotline has also been set up by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation: 1-800-535-1345.

The heat wave is expected to break mid-week, with highs of 87 degrees forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday. But it will stay uncomfortably hot and humid into the weekend.

In addition to the heat and humidity, there's an ongoing threat of thunderstorms throughout the week and weekend, especially in the afternoons.
