NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A United Airlines flight out of London headed toward Newark Friday morning was diverted to Maine when two passengers, who the airline said appeared to be intoxicated, became disruptive.

United flight 833 departed from Heathrow Airport in London and landed at Bangor International Airport in Maine at around 10 a.m. The flight was originally expected at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Two unruly and seemingly intoxicated passengers were removed by law enforcement officials upon arrival in Bangor after causing what United called a Level 2 security threat.

“The customers will be banned from future United flights while we review this matter,” United said.

The 160-person flight, including crew, was sent back in the air toward Newark following the passenger removal.

According to the FAA, the reason for the Boeing 767’s diversion was a “passenger disturbance.”

The investigation is reportedly being handled by Customs and Border Protection and the FBI after the Bangor Police Department’s initial help in removing the passengers.
