There will be more female governors in 2023 than at other point in time in American history, courtesy of this week’s mid-term elections.
In fact, it’ll be the first time that particular tally cracks double-digits.
Incumbent women were already holding the highest state offices the U.S. has to offer in Alabama, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, New Mexico and South Dakota and got re-elected.
Governor Kathy Hochul also earned her first full-term in New York, having already taken over the position on an interim basis after Andrew Cuomo’s scandal-fueled resignation.
And newly-elected women will take over governorships in Arkansas and Massachusetts, states that also become the first to pair women in the top two positions – governor and lieutenant governor – as well as Oregon and Arizona, where the race remains too close to call but both candidates are women.

In total, 12 women will be serving concurrently as governors across the 50 states, besting the previous tally of nine in 2004.
