After going missing in the Australian bushland for nearly five days, a woman was finally found safe by search crews after surviving almost a week on lollipops and a bottle of wine.

The Victoria Police shared the news in a press release, noting that the 48-year-old woman, identified as Lillian, went missing after making a wrong turn in dense bushland and getting her car stuck in mud.

After being reported missing to the police by her loved ones, search crews began looking for Lillian in the hilly terrain. Luckily, a police helicopter was able to spot her car last Thursday, and video from the chopper showed police being directed to her location.

After they were able to find her, Lillian was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for dehydration, police shared in the release.

Wodonga Police Station Sergeant Martin Torpey released a statement on the rescue, saying that Lillian decided to stay in her car instead of trying to walk to the nearest town, almost 40 miles away.

“She used great common sense to stay with her car and not wander off into bushland, which assisted in police being able to find her,” Torpey said.

Her common sense also included using the supplies she had on her wisely, being that she was only planning a short day trip and packed just a few snacks and lollipops.

“The only liquid Lillian, who doesn’t drink, had with her was a bottle of wine she had bought as a gift for her mother so that got her through,” Torpey said.

Thankfully, five days were all she needed to spend in the bushland, which hit a low of 36 degrees overnight, and Torpey says she was happy to be saved.

“After being lost in the bush for five days, she was extremely relieved and grateful to see us and we were just as happy to see her,” Torpey said.
