Meet Audacy 'Launch' artist, Royel Otis

Hear Royel Otis across Audacy Alternative stations
By , Audacy

Audacy Alternative stations across the country are excited to shine a light on the best emerging artists in music with Launch, including Aussie duo Royel Otis.

Joining Audacy to give us some background on the band, Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic dove straight into their origin story explaining how the duo met in a bar close to six years ago through mutual friends. “We kind of grew up together but didn't grow up together… we were living lives in symmetry,” says Otis, as both were inspired by bands like The Cure, Death Grips, The Vines, Modern Lovers, and Bloc Party -- to name just a few.

Their breakout single “Sofa King,” Otis explains, was a demo that Royel had brought in to work on with him that took shape over the course of a number of sessions. “Otis wrote the bridge bit,” Maddell adds, “which kind of changed the whole thing up and pushed us in a different direction from what the demo kind of was, I think.”

In between hungover songwriting sessions and plenty of Playstation time, Royel Otis plan on putting their own spin on things, “jumping out of the square,” and offering up their own brand of Alternative music for the foreseeable future. “If we're home, in five years, that would be good. That would be nice,” Otis admits.

Royel believes otherwise. “In five years, I'll tell you what, Mars. Mars would be sick… be good to, like, tread on new soil, you know? Get in the atmosphere of a completely different planet… That's where I personally hope I want to go home. That is home.”
