The kitchen, meanwhile, embraces modernity. The focal point is a dramatic marble-clad arch and hood enclosure. “We went with Calacatta Oro marble, which has this beautiful greenish veining,” Slocum says. The remodeled space blends function and style, including a coffee station—a must for the espresso-loving homeowners—and ample storage cleverly concealed behind sleek panels.

Throughout the house, the attention to detail is impeccable. Original elements, like the front door with its etched glass and the restored window shutters, coexist beautifully with new additions. “We stripped and scraped the original window casings and shutters and rehung them with new hardware,” Bordelon says. The staircase, another original feature, was restored to its former glory, while the exposed-brick wall alongside it was replastered to fit the Parisian theme. “Exposed brick can suck up a lot of light, especially in a brownstone,” Bordelon notes. “We plastered the entire wall, giving it a historically accurate and cohesive look.”

The outdoor spaces, both front and back, are equally enchanting. The backyard features a charming patio, while the front garden—characteristic of Carroll Gardens—offers a lush, inviting entrance. “The front and back gardens provide a lovely balance, making the house feel like an oasis in the city,” Slocum concludes. Now, Kalmanovich and Levy say their favorite perch is in the living room. “We love drinking our coffee every morning, watching the street from our front parlor window,” Levy says. “It gives us a pretty magical start to every day and makes us feel grateful to call this place our home.”
