Live Oak, Texas, is just over six miles from San Antonio and, in good traffic, you can make the commute in about 17 minutes. The community is active and folksy; people enjoy annual neighborhood celebrations like the Memorial Day Parade and Easter Egg Hunt.
Moving to Live Oak
Live Oak is in a humid and subtropical climate, meaning it experiences hot, humid summers and relatively mild winters. Unlike the dry heat in western Texas, Live Oak is close enough to the Gulf of Mexico to get high humidity combined with high temperatures typical of southern Texas, which often leads to uncomfortable heat indexes of 100 degrees or more in the summertime. In other words, deodorant is a hot commodity here. However, freezing temperatures and snow are a rarity so, if escaping the cold is appealing, Live Oak is your kind of place.
Available dwellings include single-family homes, townhouses, duplexes and apartment buildings. Live Oak homes for rent or purchase are generally more affordable than average Texas home prices. Mobile homes are also available in Live Oak.
Housing
Rent in Live Oak is very affordable; average renters pay less than $1,000 per month for rental apartments. Studio apartments are available, but some apartment complexes specialize in larger units with two or more bedrooms, such as Mira Loma. There are also a variety of rental houses, including two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom single-family dwellings. There isn't, however, a variety when it comes to neighborhoods because the community is relatively small compared to a behemoth like San Antonio.
Rental properties in Live Oak, including townhomes for rent, are convenient to all the jobs, shopping, eating, and entertainment venues in downtown San Antonio. The biggest San Antonio attractions are Six Flags, Sea World, the AMC Rivercenter, Buckhorn Museum and the Texas Ranger Museum. As the nation's seventh-most populated city, there is never a shortage of work opportunities or places to have fun in San Antonio. It's just cheaper and a little more laid-back to live in Live Oak and make the short commute into the city.

Live Oak is a typical town in southern Texas, dominated by ranches and farmlands. Many employment opportunities are on ranches, and others are available in retail and food services. The easy commute to San Antonio makes it plausible to live in Live Oak, enjoying a lower month-to-month rent payment while working for one of the larger employers in the city. There are also some jobs available in city government, education and other supporting positions.
Things to Do in Live Oak
In addition to a shopping center and plaza, Live Oak boasts a major hospital and medical complex. Northeast Lakeview College and San Antonio College are both nearby. Live Oak Crossing features a movie theater, and Live Oak has a civic center. Dining opportunities include a mixture of locally owned and operated restaurants, such as Mama's Caf, as well as chain restaurants like Jimmy Johns, Hooligans, Texas Roadhouse and Buffalo Wild Wings. Live Oak also has a public swimming pool and disc golf course.
