    It all started with the TubShroom Drain Protector Hair Catcher. The options that were available to us at the store weren't cutting it, so we went to the drawing board and looked to mother nature for inspiration.

Works fine but not durable for my center drain sink.
I removed my garbage disposal some months ago and then needed a good sink strainer to catch food waste that I then put in the compost bin. I chose this strainer/stopper and had high hopes. I have a smaller stainless kitchen sink and the drain is in the center. This Shroom sits a bit proud, so the rubbery center of the strainer is sticks up about 1/2”. When I have a larger pot sitting in the sink, perhaps a large pasta pot, filled with water, it puts weight and pressure on this “shroom”, flattening the stem. So over the past several months the mesh “shroom” stem has cracked and it is only a matter of time before it breaks off entirely. If you have an offset drain or a larger sink, this won’t be a concern for you, but it has turned out to be a deal breaker for me. Otherwise it works quite well.

This product worked better than I expected. You kinda hope for the best but expect there to be some kind of disappointment. This simply doesn’t have one. It sits perfectly flat on the sink so that none of the junk can get underneath it and yet still allows the water to flow smooth. The handle in the center sits just a bit above the rest so that no plates or anything can plug up the drain which is really nice as it allows the water to always flow. I’m definitely getting more for other sinks. I’ve tried several other types which never worked as expected. Wish I got his a long time ago.

I was hopeful that this strainer would work well in my kitchen sink, and so far, it has. I like the sturdy stainless-steel construction, and it fits my drain opening very nicely. Previously, I had the OXO brand which worked well and was super-easy to empty due to its "pop-out" feature—the rubber material which you simply turn inside out when emptying. The OXO brand would get icky and slimy very quickly and had to be washed and scrubbed off. I mostly placed it in the dishwasher to do the cleaning job. This new one requires a light tap, tap, tap on the side of the trash can, which removes the waste, most of the time. Occasionally I need to use a bit of paper towel to get everything out, which is okay. It does keep the water flowing down the drain even with a lot of food debris in the basket, as others have noted. Overall, I like it, and it certainly performs better than the strainer that came with my sink. It seems that sink manufacturers don't put much thought into the efficient design of their strainers. It has been that way for as long as I have been washing dishes, which is, for many decades.
