Cannot Believe This Beast
I had purchased this as a follow-up to a heavy 8lb Fiskars Maul that I got at the same time because I figured having something a little lighter at ~5lbs would be easier to throw around for smaller splits.Well, I haven't TOUCHED the 8lb one at all, and I am SHOCKED.This thing absolutely blows through anything I've put in front of it; 18" long logs that are gnarly, stringy, knotty - doesn't matter; splits it with ease.Granted I'm a young/healthy/decently strong person so I can put a considerable amount of force behind the swings, but I'm still only doing half-swings for pretty wet Maple and it's absolutely popping apart. One of the things I love the most about it is the slightly curved/hooked ergonomic bottom portion to help keep your hand settled on the handle without needing to have as strong of a grip - it feels SO nice. This axe combined with the Fiskars 28" Hookaroon makes splitting not only much easier but genuinely fun.Cannot recommend highly enough.

As a beginner in the world of wood chopping, I was on the lookout for an axe that wouldn’t be too intimidating or difficult to use. I found exactly what I needed in this splitting axe. Here’s why it’s been great for me:

• Well-Balanced Design: The balance of this axe is remarkable. It’s not too heavy, making it manageable for someone who’s not used to handling such tools. This balance helps in making each swing feel more natural and less tiring, which is really important when you’re just starting out.
• Ease of Use: This axe fits comfortably in the hands, and the grip is secure. I was worried about the axe slipping or being unwieldy, but those fears were unfounded. It’s user-friendly, even for a complete novice like me. Keep in mind I always wear glove when working outside.
• Durability: I’ve been using this axe for a season now, and it’s still as sharp as when I first got it. This durability is a big plus because it means I don’t have to worry about constant maintenance or sharpening, allowing me to focus more on learning the proper techniques.
• Effective on Various Woods: Whether I’ve tackled softwood or hardwood, this axe has performed consistently well. It’s been a great confidence booster to see how effectively it splits different types of wood.

Overall, for any beginners out there looking for their first splitting axe, I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s made my initial foray into wood splitting much less daunting and far more enjoyable.

This review focuses on the aspects that are most relevant and reassuring for someone new to wood splitting, emphasizing the ease of use, balance, and durability of the axe.

This splitting axe is excellent. I recently purchased this axe and put it to use over the past few days splitting some cherry. Some of this cherry was dry dead standing and some was green but cut a few weeks ago. This is a lightweight splitting axe and I was skeptical immediately but the amount of positive reviews were enough to make me curious to purchase this. I only have a traditional splitting maul to compare this against and it was no contest. I anticipated that this was not going to work on well on pieces that did not have straight grain. Here is the skinny... on straight grained cherry (and I would assume most other species) cut at lengths of about 18 inches and diameters anywhere from 8 to 14 inches I only needed to swing the axe from above my head without putting any extra power into it - just the weight of the axe took care of the wood, this was found in green and dry rounds. Now... onto the tough pieces, some of the pieces had crooked grain and branches that were cut off when the tree was felled. These proved to be more difficult. That would be the case with any splitting tool. Once piece of dry, twisted, base trunk wood at a about a diameter of at least 20 inches was the most difficult. It took repeated hits with a lot of power behind it to get it to split. Working from the outside in it was made into stovewood... eventually. I compared this with the splitting maul on the round that was just above it - the slitting maul just bounced off and made no progress. I will say that even with the gnarly twisted trunk wood mentioned above when it was hit with the X27 it would always go into the wood about an inch or slightly more and make splits across the top of the round (unlike the traditional maul - that just bounced off). I really appreciate this axe and am glad that I purchased it. Also some reviewers mentioned that they had the axe head develop chips across the sharpened edge - I saw or experienced no such problems. I do have some of the paint or whatever they coated the axe with now worn off so I oiled the head so it will not rust. The plastic scabbard/sheath is interesting and seems to work well. The handle is very comfortable and the orange is nice so it is easy to find. I split with both gloves and without gloves - worked great both ways. The handle did seem to absorb most vibrations. If I had the need to split 5 - 6 cord per year I think that I would not even bother with a gas splitter (maybe). But... keep in mind that I only used this on cherry and only for about one cord (face cord). I have some dry red oak to give it a whirl on and will update if the results are much different.

I want to like this axe, I do! I have used it for almost three hours over two separate sessions.

The good points, this axe splits wood! It is sharp and the weight distribution is amazing. After my first 30 min trial run when I got it was fun. I did not want to quit but it got to dark to keep cutting. This axe is everything they say it is. It makes lighter work of the heavy task of splitting rounds 24"-36" in diameter.
Now the only bad point for me, a tingling in my left thumb. I noticed it after the first time and just shook it off as getting used to a new axe. No big deal.
The second time I used it for over 2 hours. I split a lot of wood. Wearing gloves with it was not workable. It caused a pinching and began to rub a blister on my left thumb. I took the gloves off and kept going as this axe makes splitting wood as much fun as it can be splitting wood. The tingling in my thumb began to grow. It feels like just the last joint in my thumb is asleep. Now two days later the tingling is still there, but dimishing.
This is supposed to have shock-absorbing properties in the handle. But, the end of the handle is hollow. It seems like my left thumb bears the brunt of any vibrations coming down the handle. It makes it unusable for me.

EDIT:
I did not return the axe as I thought I would. I continued to use it and discovered the discomfort came from the gloves I was wearing. I changed to a different pair and the issue went away.
This is an AMAZINg axe. I really like it. You can see from the pictures I have split a little bit of wood since I got it. It has kept a very sharp edges. I have not had to sharpen it and it still cuts though oak and hickory like butter. It has great weight distribution. And after changing gloves I can split till my I just run out of time and have a good bit of work to show for it. I like this axe!

I have paired it with the 6.5 lb maul. They are a great combo.
