A Cut Above

Joey King Chopped Off Her Hair in the Middle of the Cannes Film Festival

I'm not gonna lie, guys: I've been a little bored with Cannes Film Festival celebrity beauty looks this year. Don't get me wrong — there's been no shortage of gorgeousness on the red carpet, but there just haven't been all that many jaw-dropping hair or makeup surprises like past years have delivered. But perhaps Joey King read my mind from 4,000 miles away because she completely switched up her look mid-festival.

If you caught photos of King when she attended the Cannes screening of La Plus Precieuse Des Marchandises on Friday, you know the acclaimed actor wore her long hair in deeply parted, loose waves that flowed over the straps of her pastel blue Cong Tri gown. But at some point between that appearance and her next red-carpet stroll, the We Were the Lucky Ones star decided to part with about a foot of length.

King attended the Cannes closing ceremony on May 25 revealing a dramatically different haircut. This time, her hair came nowhere close to draping over any part of her gown, a stunning pale yellow, scoop neck Miu Miu dress with a playful lower-back cutout, paired with the sparkliest opera gloves you ever did see. Instead, her hair had been cut above the jawline: a “Prada bob,” as stylist Dimitris Giannetos calls it.

Giannetos posted a video making it abundantly clear that the bob isn't an illusion; he's seen cutting off several inches as King calmly smiles. He styled it sleek with a bit of an inward bend, topping it off with the simplest bobby pin.

“We wanted to do a drastic change for her second red carpet,” Giannetos tells Allure, who says he wanted to keep it sophisticated and simple. “I decided to cut the hair in an above-chin-length blunt bob with an extreme side part we have seen at the Prada show.” He also refreshed her hair color with L'Oréal Paris Le Color Gloss in Honey Blonde.

While it's a major cut, this, of course, is nowhere near the most drastic chop we've seen on King, who has completely shaved her head for parts in the past. But that doesn't mean it's not a refreshing change — one that we can see inspiring plenty of summertime bobs.
