Jennifer Lopez’s Updo Is Unraveling, But, Like, in a Cool Way

Why doesn't my bun ever look like this when it's falling apart?

Updos are my beauty Achilles heel. I can create a casual topknot with a hair elastic, but if you ask me to do anything with pins or some semblance of smoothness, I implode. It will fall apart almost immediately. But based on Jennifer Lopez’s latest swept-up style, a little unraveling can look incredibly chic.

Now, don't get me wrong: When I say J. Lo's hair is unraveling, I don't mean her updo is intentionally messy like the bun she wore to the Met Gala. Everything about the look she wore to the premiere of Atlas, her new Netflix sci-fi movie, was sleek from head to toe — but especially her head.

Lopez arrived at the Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre ready to pose in a two-piece, strapless, black-and-white ensemble by designer Greta Constantine. Her neck and ears were decked out in gems that, thankfully, her updo allowed to be seen in all their sparkling glory.

But the updo wasn't just staying out of the way — it was one of the highlights of her look. From the front, and even from one side, it looked like a classic wrap-around bun with a super-smooth base. But from the other side and back, it becomes apparent that it's a creative, sculptural masterpiece.

Instead of the six inches or so being pinned to complete the bun, it swoops down in a curved tail that stays close to her head.

I'm not saying I could ever recreate this look on my own. But if unraveling updos are about to become a thing, I can definitely handle the unraveling part.
