The 13 Best Shine and Sheen Sprays Hairstylists and Editors Love
“I don’t want glossy, healthy-looking hair,” said no one ever. But unfortunately, achieving super shiny hair without a little help from serums, oil sheens, or shine sprays can be difficult. We recognize there are a ton of options out there, and it’s hard to figure out which one is best for you. So we checked in with some hair experts to help us get to the root (pun intended) of our confusion.
First up, what type of sheen spray you use depends on your hair texture. "Oil sheen sprays are best dryer or natural hair textures," says Nelson Vercher of Rita Hazan Salon, adding that dryer hair can take heavier oils without the strands looking too weighed down. To add shine to wash-and-go styles, hairstylist Patricia Williams recommends using oil mists after hair is at least 80 percent dry. “For defined curls, less manipulation of the hair while drying will give your textured hair more elongation and more shine with movement and body,” she adds. Williams also advises clients to use shine-enhancing products with twist-outs to help keep hair smooth and frizz-free.
But if your hair isn't super kinky or dry, that doesn't mean you can't use a sheen. "If you have finer hair, look for a spray that's much lighter," says Kiyah Wright, hairstylist and founder of Muze Hair salon in Los Angeles. "To add a little shine to finer hair, I would use a shine spray that emits a fine mist that evenly and lightly coats the hair."
Another word of advice? Use sheen sparingly. According to trichologist and hairstylist at Crown Worthy, Sophia Emmanuel, using too much shine spray can cause buildup on the hair and scalp, which contributes to issues like dandruff and itchy scalp. “If you are using oils to add shine, make sure you are cleansing with shampoo that helps remove build up and clarifies the scalps,” she adds.
If you do get carried away, you can reverse the greasy look by counteracting it with an aerosol spray (the alcohol works as a drying agent). You can also try blotting your hair with a paper towel, just like you would if your face was too oily, and a dry shampoo can also help refresh your look. Now that you're armed with the basics, keep scrolling to see which sheen sprays are the best of the best, according to our experts.
