Water Activities > Swimming
Canada’s world class waters boast some of the best beaches, lakes, rivers shorelines for both serious and recreational swimmers.
Before dipping your toes in the water, do your homework on where to safely swim and the kind of equipment you’ll need for any particular water activity.Swimming is where movement and function meet fun but stay aware of the hidden risks such as sudden drops and swimmers itch that lurk just under the surface. Be sure to get into the swim of all things involving general water knowledge like the difference between a tide and a current and knowing the do’s & don’ts of swim safety.
Always swim with a buddy, check weather conditions and be aware of potentially dangerous currents, undertows and cold water temperatures.
SAFETY TIPS
- At the water’s edge? Be bear aware. Bears have a keen sense of smell and are attracted to the fish you clean & gut. Ensure you know what to do if you meet one.
- In, on, or near a river? These swift-moving bodies of water can quickly change from playground to danger zone if you don’t have the requisite knowledge of river safety before you launch. Actively seek out and participate in courses on river safety, fishing safety and boating safety in your area. The skills you learn could one day save a life… your own!
- Check the weather before you head out. Understand weather patterns, hypothermia and cold water shock.
