2023, Studia bithynica. Symposium on the archaeology and history of Bithynia in northwestern Anatolia, May 11-12, 2023
This is the poster of the symposium on the archaeology and history of Bithynia in northwestern Anatolia that took place on May 10, 2023 in Izmir, Turkey via Zoom. It was a part of Colloquia Anatolica et Aegaea, Congressus internationales Smyrnenses. STUDIA BITHYNICA. An e-symposium on the archaeology and history of Bithynia in northwestern Anatolia Date: May 10, 2023. Meeting venue: Zoom.us Bithynia was an ancient region in northwestern part of Anatolia, adjoining the Sea of the Marmara, the Bosporus and the Black Sea. It was bordered Mysia, Paphlagonia and Phrygia. From the fourth century B.C. it was an independent kingdom and its capital Nicomedia (today İzmit in Kocaeli) was rebuilt on the site of ancient Astacus in 264 B.C. Bithynia was bequeathed to the Roman Republic in 74 B.C., and became united with the Pontus region as the province of Bithynia et Pontus. During the Late Antiquity the region of Nicomedia and Nicaea witnessed several events related to early Christianity and early Christian ecclestiastical history. In the seventh century it was incorporated into the Byzantine Opsikion theme. Bithynia was eventually conquered by the Ottoman Turks between A.D. 1325 and 1333. In this e-symposium our aim was to compile all recent evidence on the archaeology, history, epigraphy, numismatics, historical geography etc. on Bithynia and its cities, such as Nicomedia and Nicaea during the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods, i.e. between the sixth century B.C. and 14th century A.D. The main organizers of this symposium is Ergün Laflı from Izmir (elafli@yahoo.ca) and Zoe Tsiami from Volos (zoetsiami@gmail.com). Sverkos and Tsolakis provide a guide to the inscriptions published, mentioned, or discussed in the volumes XLVI – LX (1996 – 2010) of Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum for scholars and students of Greek epigraphy. The Consolidated Concordances is a catalogue of references to inscriptions and their respective occurrences in the entries of SEG. By using this volume, the readers can find the corresponding entries of SEG where the first edition or later studies of inscriptions of their interest are presented. Moreover, Tsolakis has collected and compiled the epigraphic abbreviations both those used in SEG since volume XXVI and those included the “Liste des abréviations des éditions et ouvrages de référence pour l'épigraphie grecque alphabétique” ( GrEpiAbbr).

The Thracian City of Salmydessos: Eastern Gateway to the Bosporus2013 •
The series of myths about the Argonauts is the first source mentioning Greek ships that appeared in the Bosporus. They all agree that the Argonauts met Phineus when they crossed the Thracian Bosporus. Phineus has always been indisputably connected with the Bosporos. The Greeks did have a memory (turned into a myth) of a Late Bronze Age invasion into the Pontos Euxeinos, which in terms of chronology should mean 13 th-11 th century B.C. Phineus represented a royal family reigning over the Black Sea coast at the European side of the Bosporus, and therefore controlled Hellenic entrance into the Black Sea. The penetration of the Propontis became easier only after the sack of Troy and the end of the famous war. The sailing of the Argonauts is represented as a clear marking line-the passage afterwards becomes easy. Phineus ruled over the Thracians, and at the same time he had a serious problem, metaphorically presented by the Harpies. The first hypothesis is that the Greek Argonauts interfered as allies. They helped the king to retain his power. In return he agreed to make significant concessions. The second hypothesis is that the Greeks did not come with peaceful intensions. Phineus welcomed them rudely and Heracles slew Phineus himself and no small number of the rest, and restored to the sons of Phineus their ancestral rule. This is a typical example for a classical interference in an argument for inheritance of power, where the help of the Greeks was decisive. Both hypotheses can be united in the following manner. The decisive interference of the Greeks at the end of the Dark Ages destroyed the monopoly of the country of Salmydessos. As a result the Greeks set up their own base on the Asian coast of the Black Sea.

Abstract The territory of Bithynia has long attracted the attention of travelling antiquarians due to its rich archaeological and epigraphical potential. Archaeologists and epigraphers such as E. Kalinka, G. Mendel, L. Robert, F. K. Dörner, D. French, S. Şahin and Ch. Marek conducted epigraphic and historical geographical research here between the mid-19th and early 21st century and published the results of their researches in the context of their boks or articles. Many Greek and Latin inscriptions of Bithynia were presented in these Works in this way. In recent years, with the permission of Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkish Republic, new epigraphical field surveys have started within the Roman Bithynia (Nikaia, Claudiopolis, Modrene, Prusias ad Hypium, Tios/Tieion, Amastris), including in the districts of Geyve, Taraklı and Pamukova (Sakarya province) and Gölpazarı and Osmaneli (Bilecik province) by a team headed by Dr. H. S. Öztürk; and since 2012 in Göynük and Mudurnu (Bolu province) by a team headed by Dr. Filiz Dönmez-Öztürk. Concurrently, new epigraphical research has been conducted in Amasra, Bilecik, Bolu, Bursa, İznik, Karadeniz Ereğli, Kocaeli, Konuralp and Söğüt Archaeological Museums. The excavations at Tieion/Tios (Zonguldak-Filyos province) on the southern Black Sea coast have also presented new inscriptions that have been compiled into a corpus. Consisting of honorary decrees, milestones, dedications to gods and goddesses, weights and gravestones, these inscriptions add new information to the history of Roman Bithynia. Kapak Yazısı Eskiçağ Bilimleri dünyamızın parlak bir yıldızı olan Filiz Dönmez Öztürk’ün aramızdan zamansız ve erken ayrılışı üzerine, O’nun anısını ebedi kılmak ve ismini ölümsüzleştirmek amacıyla, 14 yıl boyunca hizmet ettiği Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi Arkeoloji Bölümü himayesinde hazırlanan bu kitapta; başta kendi bölüm hocaları ve arkadaşları olmak üzere, onu tanıyan, seven, dostluğunu paylaşan, onunla ortak bilimsel paydalarda buluşan, aynı proje ve araştırmalarda yer alan, Türkiye’nin ve Almanya’nın çeşitli üniversite, enstitü ve kurumlarından, her biri kendi alanında uzman akademisyen ve araştırmacı bir araya gelerek, Neolitik Dönem’den Bizans Dönemi sonuna kadar çok geniş bir dönemi; arkeoloji, mimari, epigrafi, numismatik, klasik filoloji ve eskiçağ tarihi gibi farklı disiplinleri kapsayan, birbirinden değerli makalelerini kaleme almışlardır. Filiz’in 41. yaşında, 41 biliminsanının katkısıyla sunulan bu çalışma ile Filiz’in “anısının ebedi kalması” ümidimizle: μνήμης χάριν ❦ mnemes kharin
