Carolina Moment: Symonds creates one-of-a-kind pieces at Old Souls Custom Creations

BARNARDSVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Rik Symonds is the owner of Old Souls Custom Creations in Barnardsville, and says what he does is "kind of hard to describe."

At Old Souls, which is located at 1679 Barnardsville Highway, he creates one-of-a-kind custom art pieces out of wood.

“The sky is the limit...whatever design that they want,” is how he describes his business.

Symonds adds, “It’s very easy for me to see what the piece is going to be. Their excitement helps me."

Symonds says he is like a lot of artists.

"They just see the final picture and they just reverse engineer from what they want," he said. "Like, alright, well, I have this and what do I have to do to get that?"

Symonds says his diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a curse and a blessing.

“It’s amazing. Ican be hyper focused and become incredible on something and then lose interest just as easily, and I won’t pick it up again," he said.

The curse part, Symonds says, is that he will miss obvious things that he will struggle with.

"You know where something that is creative, harder to touch, harder to see... you know, that comes naturally for the most part," he said.

If you buy a table, Symonds says it's all done by hand plaining.

"You can really enjoy the process of it. The production isn’t as important as the act," he said.

For a long time, he said he's wanted to be famous for his handmade art, but now he is just happy enjoying his work. Peaceful, he said, is the best way he can describe it.
