Christina Irene, an advocate for knocking down stigmas and ripping down the shroud around invisible disabilities, joined us at Brookings to share her experiences and tips.

Time again to join me & Brent Orrell #OnTheFrontPorch on Thursday, April 4 at 10 AM ET as we discuss "The Overlooked Americans: The Resilience of our Rural Towns and What it Means for our Country" with author Elizabeth Currid-Halkett. Elizabeth's analysis shows that rural America is doing better, and that the divisions b/t rural & urban on hot-button policy issues are much smaller, than most people expect. This promises to be a rich conversation! (Fun fact: we spent our childhoods in towns that are 10 minutes from each other in PA...) #RuralMatters #RuralDevelopment #Rural American Enterprise Institute The Brookings Institution https://lnkd.in/er8BfY3z

This month, students from Claremont McKenna College, Waynesburg University, The University of Georgia, SUNY Brockport, University of Michigan, Brown University, James Madison University, Georgetown University, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Loyola University Chicago, and University of Wisconsin-Madison visited Brookings for a fun event hosted by the Hutchins Center! The students gathered to play the Fiscal Ship, a computer game where players choose their goals for government and pick from about 125 tax and spending options to restrain the federal debt. After playing the game, students shared their thoughts and heard from Brookings staff about their career trajectories and experiences at the institution. Check out a few highlights below and play the game here: www.fiscalship.org Photo credit: Robert Powell

Building a stronger #infrastructure workforce requires more than money. Yes, huge new federal investments--via the BIL and IRA--have potential to create more jobs, but we still need to address systemic gaps in training, outreach, and coordination to reach more workers in more places. And the clock is ticking. Thanks to Robert Espinoza for coordinating on this new piece that highlights some of these systemic needs, based on recent research from the National Skills Coalition and BlueGreen Alliance. https://lnkd.in/e-dyPYrj

Outside of a few narrow industries and occupations, there is very low awareness of apprenticeships as a learning option in the United States. New proposed rules from the Department of Labor won’t solve the problem, Annelies Goger warns.
