About us
Who we are: The American Enterprise Institute is a public policy think tank dedicated to defending human dignity, expanding human potential, and building a freer and safer world. The work of our scholars and staff advances ideas rooted in our belief in democracy, free enterprise, American strength and global leadership, solidarity with those at the periphery of our society, and a pluralistic, entrepreneurial culture. How we do it: We are committed to making the intellectual, moral, and practical case for expanding freedom, increasing individual opportunity, and strengthening the free enterprise system in America and around the world. Our work explores ideas that further these goals, and AEI scholars take part in this pursuit with academic freedom. AEI operates independently of any political party and has no institutional positions. Our scholars’ conclusions are fueled by rigorous, data-driven research and broad-ranging evidence. Our work: Our scholars not only engage in research that focuses on today’s most critical challenges but also look ahead to ideas and issues that have yet to be widely recognized. AEI scholars pursue innovative, independent work across a wide array of subjects. From economics, education, health care, and poverty to foreign and defense studies, public opinion, politics, society, and culture, our experts drive the competition of ideas.

Meet our Intern of the Week! Leah Renkema My name is Leah Renkema, and I am a senior at Hope studying Political Science and Accounting. This semester, I've had the privilege of interning with the Academic Programs team at the American Enterprise Institute. Academic Programs connects college students with the work of AEI's scholars, and works to promote civic discourse on college campuses. At AEI, I've primarily provided statistical analysis of student engagement to inform admissions and outreach decisions for our Summer Honors Program. I also helped prepare for and was able to attend one of our annual student conferences. I am incredibly grateful for the learning opportunities I've been provided at both AEI and through the Washington Honors Semester, which has been an invaluable experience.

"Nationally, an estimated 26 percent of public school students were considered chronically absent last school year, up from 15 percent before the pandemic, according to the most recent data, from 40 states and Washington, D.C., compiled by the conservative-leaning American Enterprise Institute. Chronic absence is typically defined as missing at least 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days, for any reason." See Nat Malkus' data in The New York Times 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dvTwqCut

Artificial intelligence is not just a term used by grumpy people to describe those of us in the health policy community. Automation and AI offer incredible promise as a technology platform to revolutionize health care in so many ways. From automating the process of clinical notes so that doctors don't spend their entire day staring at a computer screen to teeing up diagnoses in radiology for radiologists to more efficiently read CT scans, technology can transform care delivery. AI can also improve the efficiency of FDA review, speed up drug discovery, or even automate simple elements of clinical practice, allowing researchers and doctors to operate at the highest level of their training. Lots of policy questions need to be answered, from paying for automation to promote competition and lower costs to practitioner liability to FDA oversight. I've gathered a pragmatic group of people to discuss these issues at American Enterprise Institute on Wednesday, April 10th at 1 PM. Join us as I moderate a discussion featuring Colin Rom (a16z Bio + Health), Mark Leahey (CEO Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA)), and Jane Bambauer (free speech law expert from University of Florida - Fredric G. Levin College of Law). 🌸 Spring books from AEI 🌸 These two new titles from AEI authors Tim Carney and Bradford Wilcox make the case for getting married and having kids. What people are saying: “Americans are overwhelmed by the idea of raising kids—and understandably so. Tim Carney’s Family Unfriendly is the book we all need to understand the problems, and then meet them head-on with hope and joy.” — Arthur Brooks, Harvard Kennedy School; coauthor with Oprah Winfrey of Build the Life You Want “Finally a book from academia which tells the truth about the value of marriage. Based on sound research and real-life examples, Brad Wilcox calls for a return to the fundamental building block of a healthy society. I wish every adult in America could read this book.” — Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages Order your copies today! 📚

The military is failing to adequately respond to its toughest recruiting environment since the establishment of the all-volunteer force. On measures that often matter most to recruits, such as cash compensation, the military is falling behind civilian wages. A new report from John G. Ferrari shows why working in fast food, for example, is turning out to be a better option for young adults than serving their country in the armed forces. 🍔 https://lnkd.in/erXvApDn

In a new report for the American Enterprise Institute on Navigating the Future of Work, Daron Acemoglu warns that worker-displacing applications of AI "will continue to produce disruptive results, and the productivity gains are likely to be less than optimists expect, because we haven’t made the adjustments and counterbalancing investments necessary for creating jobs—especially good jobs—for a broad range of skills." How can we ensure that #AI adoption creates good jobs and new tasks, instead of automating work and increasing inequality? Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/gjfuUxbs

Protectionism is running amok: The President of the United States is opposing investment by a staunch ally in a US manufacturing company. US Steel is an American icon. But in my latest Financial Times column, I argue that even more iconic than US Steel are the commitments that President Biden would be undermining if he blocked the Nippon Steel's acquisition of US Steel — to sound economic policy that supports long-term prosperity, the value of foreign investment, and support for America’s allies, the rule of law and economic freedom. https://lnkd.in/eX_YrX8v
