People in Kinston will now be able to enjoy a designated area to legally drink alcohol in public. A ribbon cutting ceremony was hosted today, July 3 to celebrate the new social district. However, officials say there are several requirements.

People will not be able to have open containers out in public. Their alcoholic beverages must be purchased from one of the 6 participating locations that will give customers a cup with a very specific sticker on it.

Mayor Don Hardy spoke at the ceremony and believes it will benefit the community in more ways than one.

“This exciting development promises to invigorate our local economy by attracting more patrons to our shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. It also provides a unique opportunity for social interaction and community building," says Mayor Hardy.

This map shows the permitted areas where people can legally drink in public.

As of now there are 19 participating businesses. With six of those selling alcohol and the other thirteen welcoming alcoholic beverages. From 10 am to 11 pm people will be able to drink alcohol beverages that are sold at the participating businesses only.

“People don’t want to just sit in a crowded place all the time they want to get out and socialize. If they keep it under control, then it brings probability to the city, then I think that will be a good thing," says resident, Avery Dawson.

With social districts also comes public concern. Mayor Hardy reassures that measures will be taken to keep everything under control.

"We’ll continue to do what we do normally and that’s to monitor the area. Foot patrol and things of that nature, our Chief of Police is definitely locked in on the area," says Mayor Hardy.

News 12 sat down with Kinston Police Chief Keith Goyette who says they already have several officers assigned to the area but will make adjustments if necessary.

“If it comes to a situation where it's out of balance or it becomes a danger, you can always modify it with the city council's approval. But I'm excited for the City of Kinston," says Chief Goyette.

Officials believe that this will build community, attract visitors, and build the local economy.
