Rimac celebrates 15th anniversary with copper-hued Nevera

The company's founder is marking a very hectic decade-and-a-half with 9 special 1,888-hp EV hypercars

  • Mate Rimac is celebrating 15 years in the industry with a special edition Nevera
  • The EV hypercar comes painted copper, just like the wiring in its powertrain
  • The company will make just nine, and cost the equivalent of almost CDN$3.5 million

The timeline is incredible. Fifteen years ago, Mate Rimac was told to not even try to build an automobile company in Croatia. Thirteen years ago, he set a bunch of world records for EV performance by stuffing a forklift motor into a 1984 BMW 3 Series that had blown its engine. Twelve years ago, he designed and build his first prototype — the Concept_One — in just five months, with a crew of but eight employees.

Six years ago, Rimac Automobili, as his first automobile project was called, announced plans to build the world’s first all-electric hypercar. Three years ago, the Nevera was introduced, and it set some 30-plus world speed records. Two years ago, based on the incredible technological superiority of that Nevera, he was named CEO of Bugatti. Since then, he’s become the head of Verne, another Croatian auto company, this one vying for leadership of the ride-hailing space. It has been, to say the least, 15 hectic years.

But years definitely worth celebrating, which is why the Rimac Nevera has a 15th Anniversary Edition. Although the changes to this special edition are largely cosmetic, only nine will be built, the first in a novel matte copper finih that, according to Rimac, is a celebration of the “material most widely used in its electrical cables.” There’s a naked carbon-fibre splitter; exclusive dual-colour alloy wheels; and a unique “circuit board” graphic that runs the length of the car.

Inside, the Anniversary Edition features more copper — in the form of anodized switchgear and many painted surfaces — to complement its “celebratory exterior. The cabin itself can be finished in Bold Black or Pristine White while the seats are — let’s all say it together — copper leather. Cosmetic the changes may be, but the price is still an astounding 2,350,000 euro. That is, at the current exchange rates, about CDN$3,470,000.

And for all those screaming why there’s no performance enhancement, let me remind you the base 1,888-horsepower Nevera tops out at 412 kilometres an hour (256 mph); accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 1.82 seconds; and has hit 275 km/h (170 mph) in reverse. In other words, there are no performance enhancements because none are needed.
