Mauritania: With IMF support, new program to assist authorities' climate change adaption, mitigation, and transition policies
Turning to Mauritania, our UN team, led by Resident Coordinator Lila Pieters Yahia, reports that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), yesterday approved an agreement for a [US$258.21 million] program under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) to assist the authorities’ climate change adaptation, mitigation and transition policies. The authorities’ RSF program benefitted from close cooperation between the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the UN, and the Government of Mauritania, with the support of the Resident Coordinator’s Office. The program will bolster Mauritania's efforts to strengthen its resilience to climate shocks, protect vulnerable people, including women, and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources. Strengthening the national social protection and water management systems are also at the forefront of the RSF reforms. The programme will run for 31 months, starting next year. The Resident Coordinator, Lilia Pieters Yahia, said that this is a crucial step showing such partnerships can advance national commitments to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and climate adaptation, mitigation and transition.
